Re: L&B More of the Old Line

    Clarification again

There is nothing "Peculiar" , stange , abnormal , deviant , or odd about what is going on.

Exmoor Associates is a company registered at companies house and operating correctly doing a job to meet its objectives.

Sometimes one organisation cannot have all the specialised attributes to do all of everything and be good at it, so with one specialised act, in many cases people consult specialists organisations to do certain jobs or solve certain problems.

The L&B organisation does not currently talk easily with EA I will confirm that. However EA has a fixed management, L&B has a changing one, when that management changes which enevitably it will ,the dialogue between EA and L&B might be restored. In the mean time it is probably best to remain without dialogue, there is much to be acheived and each can trott along indipendantly.

I believe this is a temporary situation as a result of personality differences. It is not about the long term aims and objectives of either group.

Both groups have the same objective, but different ways of acheiving it . That objective is to reinstate as much of the L&B as is practicably possible EA is doing what it sees as neccessary. The elected management of the L&B is doing what it sees as neccessary.

People in this world will always have varied ways to go about a task and in doing so will debate why their way is best enevitably one will make different progress.

The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway is operating at Woody Bay with a Trust and CIC. It has an elected management who are operating trains and running a business.

They are very busy serving the needs of members and visitors with a whole hoast of events throughout the year as their web site says.

If they were asked to produce £100,000. Pounds to buy a piece of land totally disconected from the current L&B operation,One they could not justify the move and two they could not raise the money, so nothing would happen.Hence the fact that the Rawle land south of Killington lane is still in EA hands with no prospect of change.

Some members of the L&B have a bigger picture in their heads and possibly the means to create the picture they can see and collectively they can raise serious funds, separatly from the L&B. To deal with buying pieces of the old trackbed, as and when it comes availible anywhere along the line.

The two groups do not need to be connected legally, especially if it makes the job in hand more difficult, their views of each other are not important, the personalities in each group are not important.

What is important is that each group operates on good foundation with legal & financial advice and sees that what the other group is doing has value.

Responsible people on both groups should see and understand and value what is being acheived outside of their Box by the other group.

Best Regards TheEngineer Thank you for reading

The tasks are different and therfore the people that do them will have different qualities values and personalities.

Re: L&B More of the Old Line

EA is doing a great job of keeping the long-term dream alive whilst the L&B get on with keeping the railway going day to day, works for me :D

and I will join...soon my friends, soon! Hoping to get down for Lyd but it is looking increasingly unlikely :(

For once, I agree with the last post of the Engineer. Sadly, I am showing my L&B layout on exhibition the weekend of the WB show so won't be there. I am sure it will bring many lumps to folks' throats.

Keep an eye on the L&B website (link below) for ticket details - coming soon! Although they will of course be offered to L&B Trust members first, it isn't not too late to join online...

Re: L&B More of the Old Line

AN EXPLANATION to readers The above quote the last of several demonstrates my view, its usefull information but nothing to do with the topic. In fact if you have read the topic its totally disconnected This should be posted on the LYN thread , its nothing to do with Exmoor Associates buying land in the Yeo Valley, 10 miles away.

For those visitors to this thread , the thread has gone off topic several times. I posted up a new thread today in the hope people would use it to discuss anything L&B generally .

Why for what reason. When a topic strikes up it has a title , people come to the thread thinking the title is relevant, and it is and should be, then the thread goes off topic people come to it and many leave not realy getting the real information, having read a lot of stuff totaly disconnected the only comonality being L&B.

I do not believe in the greater scheme of things this is helpfull to anyone, Hence my comment and action.

Re: L&B More of the Old Line

I thought TheEngineer's other thread idea was good, but the admin closed it. All these threads get hijacked by people who want to slag of the L&B, complain, conspire, or generally talking about other irrelivant or rude stuff, and I would rather they went off and had more loosely topiced L&B discussion then clog up threads seeking information with irrelivant, inflamatory or generally off-topic stuff...

Re: L&B More of the Old Line

Perhaps it was the thread title that was confusing? Maybe if it was titled something like "L&B non-specific discussions" we might have understood it better? The title of this one isn't exactly crystal clear either come to that.

Re: L&B More of the Old Line

I locked the thread as I believe both threads would start to contain the same information. Also, having two threads on the same subject can be counter-productive. members will have to make sure they keep on topic and if members feel that a certain post or selection of posts are digressing from the initial OP, then you may report them and we will remove them if that seems necessary.

    I hope that makes sense.

Re: L&B More of the Old Line

Sorry with knowledge, I am not of the same oppinion as admin, there are striking differences between the two subjects
, there should be no postings on the" L&B more of the old line" that are about anything but buying land.

Perhaps someone could comb the thread.

    Many Thanks TheEngineer.

Or change the title to "EA investing in more of the old line" so its not about the current L&B operation,I just thought in creating the title more people would have some idea what it was about.

Re: L&B More of the Old Line

    Andy,

I see your point, but in truth, any information about EA - especially canvasing funds - is likely to have a relatively small interested readership here. It is only natural in any conversation for discussions to wonder about the topic under consideration. In a formal setting, such as a board meeting, there would be a chairman redirecting the conversation back to the specific agenda item, but this is surely more akin to a chat over a pint in your friendly local. Discussions here are between individuals, and do not represent the official views of any organisation - they have other more formal channels for that.

It is unfair to expect administrators to police this to the nth degree - they have enough to do, and surely a more rounded discussion helps to inform and educate those who are not so closely involved, which is a primary benefit to all, I would say.

Elsewhere, in my own moderation efforts, I find that if there is any more to be said about the original thrust of the topic, then it is generally easy enough to guide the conversation gently and subtly back to the original point, but often, the tangents that develop can often be quite as entertaining and informative as the original. The only time I tend to get involved in moderation is when individuals start resorting to personal attacks in public, which I feel is to the detriment of all those concerned, and to the group as a whole.

As for the relevence of the title, that can easily be determined by any new or returning viewers, but quite often, it is very difficult to encapsulate in a few words exactly what is intended, so it is probably better to set a fairly generic title, and expect that, as the initial thrust is widened, and more contribute, the subject will broaden to other more or less connected issues.

I do not believe in the greater scheme of things this really matters too much, Hence my comment. :)

Er - actually Martin, at the present time, that isn't quite the case. I've removed that comment from the website for the time being. 762 Club members will shortly (if not already) be getting the latest newsletter, which explains some changes to the structure that will ensure that all the membership donations made to date, and in future, will enable Gift Aid to be claimed. I'm sorry that the website hadn't been amended sooner. :(

    All

I could see what Engineer was trying to do and also Admin's Point as well . If this were an L&B Forum we would undoubtedly have multiple threads covering all topics , but this is Nat Pres and much of the discussion wherever it wonders at least initially can be had in one . I have amended the title to perhaps better reflect the spirit of the thread even if it has gone off on it's own way

Re: L&B More of the Old Line

I would have chosen not to respond, but on reading all this that was put up earlier, to distract yet further from the "Thread topic" I thought about it and have this to say.

In the first 7 days the thread had 3500 read visits thats 500 a day. Martyn your assertion that only a few people are interested is poor conjecture. The figures prove otherwise.

What I posted up as news and comment does reflect EA's possition and stance quite clearly.

I have not expected the moderators or admin to Police anything. Admin took a move this morning which they thought appropriate , fair do's,I PM 'd Admin and posted up , but I had not expected you to perpetuate distracting the topic there after.

I would have thought with all your personal experience of Forum management, you would have known better from experience than to intervine on this forum.

I do not agree with your view , The topic description is important, the reader visits to the thread "L&B more of the old line" indicate there is a large interest base.

Your quite wrong to suggest my motives. I did not post up seeking money or advertising, I posted the Snapper information as a general interest topic for many to read and they have . I guess a small number are finding it all quite interesting.

If the topic of Lyd or its advertising via the L&B website needed extra airing, you could have chosen to post on any of the L&B related threads running in the Narrow gauge section or even the LYD thread , but I guess there are no readers here who do not already know that LYD will be ar Woody Bay in September..

But no the motive was clear to me. It was to jam up this thread which was specifically about EA and the land in the yeo valley 10 miles away from Woody bay, and make it go off topic, as a distraction. Let me take the opportunity to thank Sidmouth for altering the topic title. I hope this reflects the content better, would you agree Sheff.

Thanks for your considerate view and assistance as a moderator most appreciated.

Re: L&B More of the Old Line

The change of the thread title appears to me to have become nothing more than the personal soapbox of the Engineer who, by his own admission, is diaffected by the present operation and management of the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway. It is my understanding that management of both the railway and EA do not generally respond in fora so I must wonder why this is going on and on.

The assertion that its purpose is to educate those who are not fully familiar with the L&B situation is quite fatuous as it is nothing but an exchange without the participation of the principals. Those who wish to explore further need to go no further than the official L&B website.

The Engineer has already stated that it is his opinion that the present management wastes money and is incompetant concerning engineering issues. I wonder what the other side of the story might say............
