    Although the sun never broke through when I was taking photos, it was an excellent photoshoot and very well attended at Burrs today with the Ivatt and the mixed freight.
    The duke started on one path followed by the Ivatt on 4 coaches on the second. 73129 & 44871 top & tailed the 3rd path towards Rawenstall - with the BR Std 5 coming off to drag the Duke back on the next run to add interest to the timetable. All in all very well done considering the failure of 45337 at the last minute.
    Pity I cant make Burrs again on sunday for the shoot all over again as Ive got family commitments then

    East Lancs Railway Winter Gala 22 January 2011

    The late arrival at the East Lancs Winter Ball was Ivatt 2P 2-6-0 No 46443 from the Severn Valley, in substitution for BR Standard 2-6-4T No 80080 which has gone to the SVR for some attention before taking up residence for a while on the ELR. Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 No 45337 was scratched the night before, leaving Riley's sister Black Five No 44871 and 2 BR Standard locos with Caprotti valve gear, Class 5 4-6-0 No 73129 and the unique 8P 4-6-2 No 71000 Duke of Gloucester to complete a roster or four locos. I managed to photograph all four during a brief Saturday morning visit, during which the light varied from dull to dismal. As I left, the sun came out.

    Some great photographs above chaps, despite the general gloom. My video from Saturday can be found here;

    Well done guys. The charter this morning was very good despite the cloudy conditions, and was one of the more popular ones I've participated in (though I haven't been since 80098!).

    Enjoyed riding on the trains for the rest of the day, especially 46443 on its first trip. However 73129 reminded us at the end what she's all about, thanks to Frank and Phil for the last trip up to Heywood.

    Back on the SVR 46443 has indeed been on "light duties", such as enginemens courses, as it is nursed carefully to the end of its ticket. Looks in fine form on the videos from yesterday.
    Incidentally, how nice to see deep and well manicured ballast on the ELR, compliments to the P-Way team!

    Great day out yesterday. Engines made a lot of noise, and a lot of beer was consumed. :)

    Many thanks to the ELR for providing a great gala.

    Didn't make Burrs for the early session - I blame the alarm clock ! Had a pleasant hour or three in and around Irwell Vale, nice start to 2011. Thanks to the ELR and all those who worked so hard to make the event happen.

    Another excellent gala at the ELR. Despite the cold, damp day - even some ground frost, or was it the mearest touch of snow? - whatever, it didn't deter people from turning up and enjoying a fine day. 73129 was loud, the Duke on 6 was an overkill, but the acceleration was certainly noticable! 44871 was superb, as you would expect. 46443 failed late on, they didn't make Rawtenstall, the train was in the siding at Rammy, terminated, when we pitched up off 44871. The Std 5 was taking it all back to Bury where the Ivatt was uncoupled after a bit of a struggle - brake hose fault? Whatever, I know not, just guessing, but brake seemed to be it. Anyway, here's my take on the day. Thanks to all at the ELR as usual. I shall be back in Feb.

    Great weekend at ELR. Went Saturday and spent the day on board and did lineside today. Was brilliant to see the Caprotti pair in tandem. Well done and thanks all at ELR.
