Ooh, that's an enticing prospect - four Island engines all in olive. Though I was joking about the livery debate!

Is W2 likely to become the permanent identity for the loco?

I really do not know what the outcome will be, it is possible that the vacuum can be retained. In service at the IOWSR the vacuum bags or the outer ends of the pipework could be removed to improve its authentic Island appearance.

Malachite? i would have thought that the E1's would have been black but as St Johns did their own thing on liveries i'm not surprised the only livery that you could use if you wanted all the genuine island engines in would have to be 1939 livery because the terriers were transfered back to the mainland soon afterwards unless you intend to re fit Calbournes small bunker again[/QUOTE]

2 of the E1s were repainted on the Island into malachite with sunshine lettering, so yes authentic for the Isle of Wight.

This article unfortunately perpetuates an error from another web site somewhere that "....in 1923, No. 110 was taken into Southern Railway stock, and renumbered as 32110."

IN fact it never carried 32110 (the number that BR would have given it if they had inherited it) until the 1990s; the Southern numbered it B110 in their 1923 numbering system.

Could someone get the IWSR web site corrected, please?

No, that's not true either - when sold to the CRC in 1927 she was still in LBSC livery numbered 110. She never received the B prefix, at least not actually painted on the engine.

No E1 ever received a number in the 32xxx series.

My Ian Allan books of 1949, 1955 and 1959 show several ex LB&SCR E1 locos numbered in the 320xx, 321xx and 326xx series. Photo from 1959 book showing clearly 32151 attached.

    Sorry, my mistake - meant "no Island E1 ever received a number in the 32xxx series". Bradley gives 32113 / 128 / 129 / 138 / 139 / 142 / 145 / 147 / 151 / 160 / 606 / 689 / 694 numbered into the 32xxx series. Apparently 32151 carried lined black between January 1949 and April 1953, the others mainland ones were plain black.

That looks really superb - I hope the IoWSR decide to keep that early BR livery. It just looks right.

Whatever livery, I look forward to seeing her in action. My wife and I visited last year and although we enjoyed the Austerity on our ride, this would be something else! My Christmas present when I was 11 was a Trix Twin train set with an E1 which I promptly painted into malachite green with a Humbrol miniature pot; I still have it.

I'm fully aware that the E1 has only just crossed to the Isle of Wight and won't be steaming any time soon, but as a few people have already said how good it would be if, once restored, it could visit various oher hetigage lines, with the Bluebell being one of the preferred destinations, I've discovered something interesting. In Klaus Marx' encyclopaedic book "The Lewes and East Grinstead Railway", there is a list of locos stored at Horsted Keynes in the early years of the 20th Century which included E1 No. 110, so any future visit to the Bluebell won't actually be a first for this particular engine, although it might well be its first visit actually in steam.

Still, all this is a long way off. I'll be quite happy to see it in steam on the IOWSR. I paid my first visit in over a decade two years ago to see "Calbourne" I had forgotten what a superb line it is. The E1 will further add to the atmosphere.

I climbed on the E1 on sunday afternoon for a quick look (don't worry, I work there and asked permission first). I think, although it does have a lot of work that needs doing, it has potential, "good bones" as my wife would say. Stroudley had a nice sense of proportion and it feels just like a very much larger terrier. The cab roof is still a bit low at the edges though, so I can see a few bumped heads in the years to come, though it is actually quite roomy over all.

Whilst the engine is on static display, are there any plans to re number it into W2 and fit the nameplates for next season ,It would look more fitting if that could be done.
if the railway wanted to could also then have a static photo session involving W2 at the head of a freight rake oilly rags in smokebox etc, to provide smoke as a way to raise more funds to assist the restoration of either this or W11. How about it?

32110 will become W2 Yarmouth in the near future.

but in what livery? my preferance would be to retain the Early Br livery whilst she is on static, and later i wouldnt mind seeeing what an E1 looks like in the early malachite , would that be with the black and white lining or yellow and black? either would match very well with W24

It will match W24 whilst it is a static exhibit, which more than likely will be a year at least, there is a great deal of planning work to be done. The new boiler to the Marsh pattern but to modern standards has to be designed, plus the numerous modifications it picked up during its Industrial life need to be identified.

Re: Tyseley Single Wheeler?? Is the Bloomer running?

I don't see the problem here. Yes, 110 is getting a new boiler. But since it needs one, the choice is recreate a Stroudley one, a Marsh one or the Bagnall one. OK, the Bagnall boiler might keep it in the locomotive's most recent form, but is arguably no more or less correct for the locomotive than a Marsh or Stroudley one; indeed, choosing a Marsh or Stroudley one results in a locomotive that is a better exemplar of an E tank. Given that, I can fully understand the decision to build a new boiler to Marsh pattern, which is the only choice for an IoW-spec locomotive. Why is the most recent form of a locomotive inherently the only "correct" one? If you rigidly took that view, we would never see an A4 in garter blue with valences again, a Bulleid with a high-sided tender - nor, indeed, many locos in anything other than BR livery.

As for the identity; well, it's only a coat of paint, it is not as if it is going to cause any irreparable damage. My own preference probably would have been to take a new identity in the "W" numbering sequence and a new name, but I am not going to lose sleep over its being W2.

Again, the aeroplane preservationists seem to have a more relaxed view here, particularly with identities: the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight repaint their aircraft into new markings almost every year, but I don't see too many people complaining. The most important thing is to see them flying.

Yep. We absolutely love identity changes on aircraft. Gives us the chance to view aircraft from long lost units.
