I was just thinking the same. The conversation seems to have become contaminated with lots of talk about western region junk

 

And on that basis Britannia is Oliver Cromwell with different nameplates?

Although I can understand why there might be some concern in diluting brand Tornado is there is something that looks almost identical (bar name plates) to the vast majority on the main line.

 

Without which a good many heritage lines would be locomotive less or deficient.

 

Tornado will never be associated with John Noakes, Peter Purves and Valerie Singleton.

 

Thankfully, though, not the better ones!

 

Apart from those narrow lines in Wales, I believe it was a certain ex GWR pannier that featured in the Railway Children which gave preserved lines a big lift in publicity.
I think a good many of the better ones (i.e. most sucessful) as you call them do use ex GWR/WR Swindon products.

 

Luck of the draw I think for the Railway children and the Barry Factor leading to a disproportionate GWR presence - not that there is anything wrong with them but I'm sure that the KWVR would have preferred a Midland 0-4-4 T or somesuch.
