Thanks Ralph, but it wasn't me! I used the same facility and came up with the same response you did. I want to keep using such an appropriate term, but hate doing that without acknowledging the guy that made such an inspired comment. It must have been on the ACE or Royal Duchy thread. I think!

Oh dear. That's the third time today a Mod, (not as in Rocker), has had to clean up after me. :(

Very nice but did I detect the regulator wasn't fully in the roof at times?

Oh, probably get taken to task these days for saying that. But on my first footplate ride with the late Gordon Porter he showed me the two controls his side.

"Cut off needs to be fixed at my age or 40, whichever is the highest. So as I get older the loco will go faster."

"And that thing up there is the regulator, which is currently in the roof and that is where it stays. I did have one that slipped down once without me noticing. But the depot paid for my therapy and I am OK now. "

    "No brake handle Gordon?"

"Oh, well, yes, but that is not something I like to talk about much. Emergency use only."

A wan and very weak smile from the late Tommy Moult working flat out on the shovel. Next to a seat that looked like it had never been used.

    ;)

Too kind Ralph. Thank you. I'll get my nappies changed a bit more often in future.

Send me an email address or a diagram showing how I can PM a photo and I'll share part of a wonderful 12 minutes I had almost in touching distance with a juvenile Tawny Owl out on the Scottish moor at night last time I was there.

And re the inspired man and that spot on comment re Jekyll and Hyde: wonderful it was 34010 talking about 34067. Of course it had to be, who else would know that!

To the end it seems, don't know about the quality of coal, I think they were shovelling cordite into the firebox... Shot through Weybridge at full pelt with steam to spare, cracking the safety, and looks like it made up 7 minutes ahead of schedule from Woking to Vauxhall.

Yes in the roof even when short of steam like that night in the down Mail when we limped into Basingstoke with 140 lbs of steam
