Today is "Pendle Dalesman Day" so off to Chapel Lane. The schools are on holiday and instead of 20/5 minutes of crawling traffic to the motorway I did it in 5. The weather was sunny, the sky cloudless, no breeze and at 9am it was already 21C and feeling much warmer. I was the only person on the overbridge, although there were several down by the foot crossing.

RTT showed the train running RT after leaving Preston. Not long to wait and then the sound of a Stanier hooter in the distance, then another and soon the lovely, unmistakeable sound of a Jubilee working hard. The exhaust roar came closer and closer before she burst into view under the occupation bridge, the sun reflected on her shiny black paintwork; a sight and a sound to behold. Moving at a good speed (35/6mph) she roared under the bridge accompanied by a fleeting grey haze. The coaches followed, as they must. The train breasted the summit (1E) and as she headed down the short section of 1/110f the beat of her exhaust quickened before she began the gentler climb towards Pleasington.

Whilst 9 coaches (+POB) may not provide the economic returns of a longer train, it is the length of train for which Jubilees were designed - and it showed.

After last week's debacle with my mobile phone only a fool would be back in action . . . here is a bit of mobile phone footage from this morning. Soundtrack is better than the visuals, so set volume to 11 and settle back.

Currently forecast by RTT to cross at Settle Jn 1721. It would take a bit of stage management for that to happen though!

45690 seen from above Helwith Bridge and on top of Shotlock Tunnel, many thanks to Ralph and the footplate crew.
