And still the comments keep coming in about 45699 being the "wrong colour". Just imagine that history were different and the LMR had extended the maroon livery to class 6 and 7 passenger 4-6-0 classes around 1958, which they could easily have done. The loco looks beautiful, sounds superb and is running really well. My only comment would be that the font of the cabside numerals (unless they've recently changed it) looks slightly wrong. As for not photographing, or going to see it, because the colour is not authentic, that's personal choice, but makes no sense to me. Those that choose to not go out for Galatea are missing out, it's only a coat of paint and it was a beautiful spectacle today.

My footage of Galatea in fine form, filmed at Culham and Lyneham. Enjoy.

There's nothing like a Jubilee in full cry and that's from somebody who's been privileged to have travelled on the 10.17 Leeds Carlisle in 1966 behind 45562 with a driver on a mission.

I've just built an O gauge 45699 with modern aws flash's and painted it maroon, hand lined and finished. I did so because it is accurate for my layout and I was incredibly fussy to get all the extra details right. Modellers are very fussy :)

I'm sure to many people this means I have ruined a model that has cost me close on £600 to build...

The history of 45699 didn't stop the day it was scrapped...

Whoever was on the handle tonight certainly was!

There was also a naughty window hanger in the 1st drop light :Jawdrop: & I don't blame them given the noise she was making on the flat! ;)

Nothing naughty about window hanging, full marks to him for doing it, I'm surprised that there wasn't more if it was going like that

Nothing wrong with that and you can't ruin a model by the painting it, I assume your layout is based on the current scene. IMHO the history of 5699 did stop when it was rescued from Barry, it then became a museum piece which is where we differ. Each to his own, my interest in the preservation scene is to build up a photographic record of scenes reminiscent of days past so I don't go out for the likes of Galatea but I don't criticise those who do.

Would you be saying the same thing if 5593 had been in charge in its current guise.

Congrats to wcrc and RTC in regards to today's happening

Saw it again at Appleford Station tonight. It was running late but it sounded like it was working hard - absolutely superb. And that's coming from the grandson of a bloke who spent his working life at Swindon Works! galatea_03.jpg

This is where I think I am weird!! Because of limited space, my layout is essentially a set of 'long sidings' about 16ft long - it's designed in such a way to be non specific - there is no element on the layout that could tie it to a particular time period - hence modelling sidings and not a main line - the landscape and buildings essentially just need vehicles of a certain era to identify it (which are easily swapped out)

When in 'modern image' mode it represents fictitious clay sidings near par, Cornwall - where most of the steam tours are turned when they come down. This gives me an excuse to use modern stock and preserved locos in my modelling. I know she hasn't been to Cornwall yet, but hopefully when I'm happy 45699 + support coach can trundle into my sidings for coaling and watering and look ok next to my 66 and modern wagons.

When in '60s or earlier mode I like to put together 'trains' of a specific period - a get 56xx with hoods for instance etc.

It means I can mode what I want accurately, but I'm not restricted to just one time period.

By doing this it also means that the things I build for myself and others can be used on the club layouts and test track without any complaints from the modern or 60s or earlier modellers - as long as I get the detail right of course!!!

I guess it's a tough one for me - recreating scenes of the past I have nothing to relate too (I'm 33) so I have to rely on photos from the past to recreate my models - maybe because I don't have that frame of reference for the jubilees in service is why the colour doesn't bother me ?!? Not sure I know the answer to that one!!

I remember red engines in Camden shed but was to young to worry about which class was which colour and they were too dirty anyway , so this red is fine with me and stands out better against the usual green background.Anyway here is the veiw over the Thames at Goring and at either end of the platform on the return. Not much historical sympathy from the modern station architects.

Here here ,my mother house was 200 yards east of the Midland main line, at the start of 6 miles of 1 in 125 .I would try and keep up with one push biking home on parallel road ,by 3/4 a mile ,my turning off point ,it would be well in front. Night time was also pretty good ,sparks going well up in to the sky. Derby to Manchester via Rowsley and vv was the best in my opinion ,S and C a damp squib compared.
