I see that Steam Dreams are still saying Tangmere for their 25th March Cathedrals Express. Anyone here know if this is realistic or will they have to get a substitute loco?

You can't knock Carnforth for dedication.. that's 3 they have produced this year.. 46115 (from failure), 48151 and now 44932.. with 34067 to follow (I dont think you can complain if 45699 slipped a bit longer ) but any where else got that kind of record in less than 6 months ?

At different ends of the scale Foxfield (hopefully) and Meiningen will be up there with Carnforth.

That all depends on how you define main line locos! Also, before getting too carried away, only 48151 has been fully overhauled, the others are being repaired or, in the case of 44932, much of the work was already done before it went to Carnforth.

I'm not decrying their efforts or work, but aknowledging it withoput the need for silly overexageration. The comparison with the Bluebell is an interesting one because much of the workj at Sheffield Park is by volunteers, at Carnforth it is all professionals as far as I'm aware.

So 46115, 45699 etc were merely kits of parts ready for assembly

WCRC is a business and operates as such. Comparison with 25mph pottering about is not really a valid comparison as the certification and operating demands are different league - and as for enthusiasm - Carnforth men not motivated - is that what you are suggesting?

Locos that are used on the main line at speeds up to their laid down limit, not those confined to a 25mph heritage line.

No. I saw it not long after it arrived at Carnforth, must have been the near the end of 2008? Most of the work already done? Definately not.

This forum has unbounded capacity for peple getting their knickers in a twist!

Where did I suggest that? The point was made about work done this year - 46115 has been repaired, but not rebuilt this year, I (and probably you) have no idea what work, if any, has been caried out on 45699.

Again, where did I suggest that? The point I was making is that the work at Carnforth is being done by people working full time in their professional capacity, whereas a lot of the work at the Bluebell is being done by volunteers working in their spare time. Therefore the fact that the Bluebell have managed to turn out several locos this year (with more to come, I believe) is, for me at least, just as impressive as a professional organisation doing what they are paid to do. As for the certification and operating demands, as far as I'm aware the boiler maintenance standards are no different and much of the difference between main line and rpeserved line in mechanical terms lies in paperwork rather than mechanics - a terrier or P doing 25 is probably working as hard in relative terms as a Royal Scot doing 75 so they both have to be maintained to a standard capable of giving close to their designed level of output.

Just want to point out that full-time workshop staff at Sheffield Park do actually help out with the overhauls and restoration work, but I believe their main role is to keep the operational fleet working.

Well done to Carnforth though, quite a collection developing up there.

    Regards,

    Dan

I tell you what - that collection shows what a massive investment in rolling stock WCRC have made! Most impressive.

So could the tender be 44932s. Be good if it had British Railways written on seeing as we have enough 5s with early and late crests. (Not that I want to start a liviery debate).
