    In my experience it's quite common for young and not so young kids to ask if the buffers are magnets. Probably something to do with the Brio(?) toys which do use magnets to couple things together.

    Yes, that is true, but this one was funnier than the usual ones who ask you, he actually believed it!

    In fact I remember reading that the use of electro-magnets for coupling full-size railway vehicles is in use somewhere in the world. (Interesting in the event of a power failure - you would have 12 independant vehicles trundling along, held together by the brake hoses!)
