    The Midland Railway – Butterley has appointed Geoff Smith as its new General Manager. Mr Smith, 53, who took up the role effective June 1, said: “It is an exciting time to be joining the railway, given what has been achieved. The organisation offers opportunities for individuals and organisations to get involved in all our activities.”

    The first day of the new job was in the middle of the Butterley Brick Week, which ran from May 27-June 5, based on the popular construction toy LEGO.

    Mr Smith added: “One of the first projects that I will be getting involved with is the restoration to working order of LMS ‘Jinty’ 0-6-0T No. 47357. It is already under way, and with continued support from the community it will not be too long before the engine returns to the rails.”
