I'm rather more surprised that there was still a nameplate to see! ;)

Not so much "still has", rather "has one that was fitted during the preservation era".

34064 was withdrawn May 1966. So these photos are early 1966. At this stage most ( if not all ? )
WC/BB/MN still retained their name plates. I had a few days intensive travelling (20/5/66 to 25/5/66 )
with a weeks rail rail rover and do not remember seeing any locos with nameplates removed.
Similarly during the week 24/7 to 30/7.

By 11/66 the following at least had lost their nameplates : 34001/8/12/7/9/21/4/5/6/52/87/8/90/3/8
35003/23. Most of the BR 5 4-6-0s had lost their ‘King Arthur’ plates.

I remember seeing 35003 being ‘run in’ ex Eastleigh at Basingstoke during August 1966 (20/8 I think
I had travelled behind 34102 from Soton to Basingstoke ) but cannot remember whether 35003
had left the works with or without plates.

But even The Flying Scotsman had its nameplates off by 1962! (I've seen several photos but can't find any online)

Southern steam is very well documented.

Weren't the East Coast pacifics generally withdrawn a bit sooner than the end of steam on the Southern, though?

Unusual that, though, possibly because FS was destined for private ownership. There are photos of 60041/52/112 with nameplates towards the end in '64.

I'd no idea Mr Pegler took delivery in stages. :)

Grand-scale version of those partwork magazines where every week they post you a bit of plastic until you've built a model spitfire or something.

Those plates must have been worth a few bob even in those days!

It looks like Tangmere could be back on the Mainline soon. I saw a few pictures on a well known social site of it doing test runs.

Could well be back hauling commercial freight, if the current grooviness continues! :Meh:
