why do wc and bb have 7 p and 5f marked on the side rather than mixed traffic this occurred while travelling on the SVR today

Because that's the way it was done on the Southern Region.

And the Southern also added an A or B to the freight classification (5FA on a Bulleid) to indicate the brake force the loco can generate when working an unfitted freight train.

Well, firstly it couldn't be labelled "mt" because the p and f classifications are different. But in any case, on BR(S), convention was to give the p and f classifications separately even if they were the same, and also add a brake classification (A=awful; B=better) related to how effective the braking performance was relative to what was needed to stop a train of the size the loco could haul. So as an example, the LBSC E4 was,in BR terms, a 2P2FB (**), not a 2MT. A Bulleid WC/BB was a 7P5FA, later I believe reclassified to 7P6F.

Even better would be 34058. Anybody got any idea when the MHR might embark on its restoration? I'd like to think that it won't be too long after 34105 is out shopped that it moves down to Ropley, but more realistically it will probably happen after 75079.

I would think 34058 will be some way off before we will see her steam. On another note I see some of the cladding has been removed from 34051. Looking at the side cladding on the cab side which has now been removed you can see there is still ashes and small bits of coal under the cab floor from when the loco was in BR service.

Agreed, however once the JB locos`s leave next year, it should free up a bit of space at Ropley, maybe allowing 34058 to move down the line along with 80150 and other items of rolling stock.

I would imagine the railway will be financially better off as well if they no longer have to pay hire fees.

All this should help in the goal of improving the rate at which restoration work can be done on the railway across all departments.

Great to hear about the cosmetic restoration work taking place on 34051, perhaps the nice Mr Hosking could open his wallet, take it one step further and enable a return to steam in return for a set period of mainline hire, partnering 34046.

Oh well, we can live in hope.

Don't forget 30506 needs to be completed and is being worked on by the S15 group and the MHR. Work is also being done on 30499 at the other end of Ropley yard with a new cab roof being fitted. Both locos will need front end frames which are now at Ropley. Then we have 41312 which is having its boiler overhauled. I would think the loco will go in to the shed at some point. 76017 needs to completed. Then we have 75079 which is also in Ropley shed being worked on. 30828 is also being worked on by the Eastleigh group. So there's a lot of work going on at Ropley without taking on 34058 and 80150 at this point in time. But I'm looking forward to see 34058 and 80150 in steam in the future. The future at Ropley looks very rosie.

Back to 34051 it hasn't been ruled out by the NRM according to the article in Steam Railway mag a few months ago. Wouldn't mind a rail tour with 34051 and 34067 double heading together from Waterloo to Weymouth and back.
