Is there a projected completion date for the Atlantic? thats going to be one very fine looking engine when it is completed, hows the fund raising continuing, i assume the next big push will be the boiler i understand its in very good condition only needing re tubing, is that correct?
is the tender being built off site , or will that progress along side the boiler, what tender chassis will that be based on, you did have a spare C class tender kicking around SP , Is that capable of providing axle boxes and wheel sets etc? .

It will be, but the plan is lined black first - it'll be olive green (and no doubt malachite) after that ...

It's ready when it's ready, though at current rate of progress, people are tentatively sort of kind of maybe thinking about 2018ish.

See post #371 above - some work has started. Probably a bit more required than a retube, but it is in good condition.

AFAIK, the tender body will be assembled on site, but it will be a while because at the moment the tender underframe provides useful flat storage.

The tender underframe was one of the first bits to be sourced years ago: the underframe comes from a B4 tender previously owned by the Manston group. They had acquired it as a possible starting point for a replacement tender for their loco, but sold it on when they realised it wouldn't be suitable. The wheel sets and axle boxes are from a C2x tender, but I believe have brand new (as in 1950s) axles and tyres; this tender had previously been used in pseudo-GWR style in the Windsor Royalty and Empire exhibition. The tender was scrapped when that exhibition closed, but the railway was able to acquire the wheel sets, though the frame was cut up in situ. Both donor tenders had been in departmental service after the demise of steam, hence their survival.

Thanks tom, The B4 tender, that wasn’t the former sludge carrier that was at Guildford next to the tunnel mouth for many years , if not, what happened to that, as it survived for quite some time

The B4 tender (interestingly enough originally tender No. 424) was rebuilt as a 4 wheel van and became DS 3202; the van body housed electrical equipment for testing diesel shunting locomotives. It was bought by the Manston group after a period at Richborough power station.

The C2x tender was the Guildford MPD water tank (DS 70183); this is the one that supplied the wheelsets, via the Madame Tussauds exhibition.

I m not sure when the tender disappeared from Guildford, possibly around 1979/80 but I always used to try and sit on that side of the train and just as you came out of the tunnel there it was. It's nice to know that it is helping the project in someway.

A friend tells me he has seen somewhere that there is to be another Brighton Atlantic 'open house' weekend in November. Is there any truth in this?

Latest project update for October with plenty of photos, particularly of the cab construction, cylinder end covers, drain cock pipe work etc.

Also a reminder that for anyone going to Giants of Steam this weekend, Atlantic House will be open both days - come and see construction "in the flesh".

An update in the Bluebell e-Newsletter, covering progress all year. Not previously reported though, it shows that the connecting rods are currently in place, which has allowed the driving wheels to be rotated to start the process of valve setting. Also a photo showing the whole cab (minus roof) erected, as was reported earlier on this thread. Also a bit of news about further work on the boiler.

I took a look at the link and it brought a big smile to my face, I know Beachy Head will be ready when she is ready, but progress is coming along very fine, hope the page on the Bluebell site will be updated soon.

Latest Atlantic update here, with lots of photos, which speak for themselves:

    http://www.bluebell-railway.co.uk/bluebell/locos/atlantic/latest.html

Lots of new castings now obtained, including a particularly neat double-Ramsbottom safety valve; as well as beginning the process of valve setting now that the reverser is firmly bolted in place in the cab.

The tender underframe exists. Last time I asked, the intention was that the tender body would be assembled on site; however, that may still be some way off as the flat tender frame provides useful storage space. From what was said in the report above "the chassis is now very near to completion and work will very soon be starting on the boiler." My assumption is that the tender body will be one of the last major items to be done, once the boiler has been bought to a point where it can be tested.

Latest Atlantic update: The rods are now in position and the valves have been set, so the rollers under the wheels have been removed and the chassis is now sitting on all its wheels. Attention is now turning to the boiler, and to that end the superheater casting has arrived - this is the second such casting, the first having to be abandoned due to a problem with the initial casting.
