The first of Besançon’s new CAF trams has begun testing in the city after arriving in the in June.

As well as static testing of lighting and door systems, the tram is also completing trial runs to conduct noise and braking tests.

Named after French novelist and poet Victor Hugo, the tram is the first of an order of 19 vehicles destined for Besançon.

The trams will all be named after famous French men and women, including Louis Pasteur and Marie Curie, and will have their own unique corresponding livery.

The trams are being built at a CAF site in Bagneres-de-Bigorre – 800 kilometres south west of Besançon – with the last vehicle expected to arrive in March next year.
