I’d give the tree the benefit of the doubt... knew you were on the train, tried it’s hardest...

No TOC train carries chainsaws, from what I am aware.

What has been asked is for the train to inspect the line, which is an everyday occurrence and I don't see why BigAl is making a point of Network Rail being lazy and making WCRC do the task. It's anything but that.

Very often, if a train has come through a section and reported a track defect/obstruction/trespass situation to the signaller, the signaller will halt the following train (in either direction but most usually same direction as reporting train if track defect) by either GSMR or down to a red signal. The signaller then asks the driver to proceed at caution through the section, to inspect the section for the issue raised and then to report back, obeying all following signal aspects. If the second train confirms the report after inspecting the section, then Network Rail will be sent out to address the problem.

Afterall, Network Rail will need to be given as much detail as possible when heading out to a call to ensure as little time lost as possible in regard to bringing the correct tools for the problem. Easiest way to ensure the report is as thorough as possible, is to send another train in the area through to inspect. Travelling at caution (speed at which the driver deems he can stop the train before hitting any obstruction/defect/tresspasser) is an entirely safe method for any traction.

Network Rail don't own or operate many 'trains' - indeed, most of their 'trains' are contracted to FOCs to actually 'operate'.

So yes, of course Train Operators 'do Network Rail's Job for them' - very sensible - just as in BR days, Traffic didn't keep everything standing while a PWay trolley went to examine the line!

Hence my comment of 'logical' at the start of my post.. Really no issue being taken by me with NR on this one. Seem to remember something similar with the 90 /50 mph run up the ECML at Danby Wiske. As for icicles, well they had been there for a tad longer.

Possibly. But it might depend on the weather up in the Eden Valley. First train over the S and C today, it wouldn't surprise me if it is running under caution from Kirkby Thore or Culgaith onwards. That's where the trees are.
