IMG_3621.JPG The second railtour to be recreated at Llangollen Railways 'Along Birkenhead lines' spring gala event will be: Ian Allan's Zulu railtour. It originally ran on the 4th of March 1967, so fittingly we will be doing it exactly 50 years later on Saturday 4th March 2017. It's purpose was to mark the end of through steam services from London Paddington to Birkenhead. It was mainly hauled by GWR castle class - 7029 Clun Castle wearing GWR livery, and was formed of BR MK1 Maroon and Blue and Grey carriages. Our recreation, leaving Llangollen at 12.10. Will feature a similar rake of carriages, hauled instead by GWR Modified Hall class - 6960 Raveningham Hall. Here she is on shed at Llangollen wearing the replica headboard.

Really looking forward to this gala but there is only one chance to ride behind 43106 and 48624 each day, seems a shame given the costs of getting them.

Shame I can't make this gala - haven't been to the LLangollen for 'donkey's years'! Even scarier, I saw the original at Snow Hill '50 years ago' with my father. Huge crowds in attendance and also saw the Birkenhead Flyer hauled by Pendennis Castle a couple of hours before The Zulu arrived. I can still remember the occasion! Andy
