On the 1st January 1975 there were still sixty main line diesel hydraulics in service (fifty four Westerns – class 52 and six Hymek’s – class 35)

The last three class 02 shunters appear to be on borrowed time with 02001 out of use at Allerton depot, 02003 used occasionally to shunt DMU stock at Allerton and 02004 usually stabled at Liverpool Exchange with occasional use at Bank Hall.

On the 23rd January 1975 whilst working a Manchester – Euston express 83003 was de-railed south of Watford and was then in collision with 86209 working a Euston – Glasgow sleeper train. 86209 ended up at the bottom of the embankment and would take a few weeks to recover.

1023 Western Fusilier suffered a broken axle at Oxford on the 29th January 1975, however despite the run down of the class escaped withdrawal.

Both 55001 (19th January 1975) and 55007 (12th January 1975) visited the Western Region Main Line for 100mph tests associated with dipped rail joints.

Derby Litchurch Lane works commenced production of Mark III coaches for the London Midland Region. There introduction into service will cascade Mark IIdef air conditioned coaches to the Midland Main Line during 1975

The Western Region now has an allocation of thirty five class 50 locomotives following completion of the Crewe – Glasgow electrification. They are allocated Old Oak Common (5), Bristol Bath Road (20) and Laira (10). Unfortunately the Western Region class 50’s are only achieving around two thirds the availability of the Western Region class 47 fleet.

The morning St Pancras – Glasgow service (the 08:00 St Pancras and 10:15 Glasgow departures) is re-routed from its traditional Glasgow and South Western route north of Carlisle to run via the Caledonian route via Beattock reducing its journey time by approx one hour.

After five months of trials the prototype HST set (252001) entered revenue service on the 5th May 1975 working a 750 mile diagram (Old Oak Common – Bristol (ECS), Bristol - Paddington, Paddington – Weston super Mere, Weston Super Mere – Paddington, Paddington – Bristol, Bristol – Old Oak Common (ECS).

Spalding Flower festival on the 10th May 1975 produced ten locomotive hauled excursion trains (37026/81, 37261, 45010, 46052, 47087, 47147/48, 47220, 47430) and two formed of DMU’s. Station pilot was 08133.

Glasgow suburban EMU 303007 was in collision with 47553 at Shawfield on the 31st May 1975.

The former Midland railway station Gloucester Eastgate and the line between Tuffey Junction and Eastgate closed on the 1st December 1975. All services are now concentrated on the former Great Western Railway station Gloucester Central and any Birmingham - Bristol services calling at Gloucester require a reversal.

In the first major change to the “Corporate Blue” policy suburban and local DMU’s and EMU’s will generally receive “blue/grey” intercity livery instead of corporate blue.

Class 52 Western’s 1046 and 1064 were involved in a depot collision at Laira and withdrawn.

Due to the lack of care and trespass by railway enthusiasts in observing and photographing steam specials British Rail will not issue point to point timings for the 1976 steam tour season.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome
