Very friendly, reasonably priced - AWESOME ENGLISH breakfast :) and about 10 mins (max) drive from Grosmont. BR Stn Ruswarp 3 mins walk - so handy for photographing Whitby steam too.

Ha ! I WISH ! If it was I'd sell up and move there! £45, but its a very nice place, owners very friendly and helpful.

I believe the pub next to the crossing at Grosmont do B and B too.

For a real budget stay - take your tent and camp in a site close to the line at Goathland :)

Places near to Llangollen are listed on SSS2 website:

    http://www.6880gala.co.uk/Your_visit/Your_visit.html

I will warn you i know most B&Bs are fully booked within Llangollen itself so you may have to start looking outside of Llan. Don't know how long the above will stay up for after April.

I was thinking of taking a week off to see some of the South Western preserved lines that were out of reach when I was a kid. I don't drive, so does anyone have any recommendations for a suitable base if I want to visit the Bodmin & Wenford, South Devon and Paignton & Dartmouth railways?
(I'm a Liverpudlian, so this region is a closed book to me - for now anyway).
As a non-driver, my options are limited, so I was thinking of maybe findign a B&B in Newton Abbott?

For the WSR I can recommend Lyn Valley Guest House
    3 Tregonwell Road
    Minehead
    TA24 5DT
    01643 703748
We always stay there, reasonably priced, a very good breakfast and only 3-4 minutes walk from the station.
Now can any one suggest some where to stay for the NYMR.

if all goes according to plan, there will be a Holiday bungalow sleeping 4 ~ 6 people for rent from next summer in Broadsands, Paignton with the following fine views of Goodrington Bank and the farmland / sea behind
    [IMG]
5 mins walk to the beach / south west coast path
10-15 mins walk to Churston Station
10 mins walk from local shops, chippy, take away, post office
2 mins drive to petrol sattion
2 miles to Brixham, 1 mile to Paignton centre
It is our current home, but we are moving and will be equipping it for holiday accom over the winter. I will post again when we are 'open for business'

I'm afraid so. Bit small for growing family and garden too steep for little ones!

    On an associated topic:

There must be B&B's run by railway enthuiasts and in particular regular volunteers. I have visited the UK twice and the general std of B&B accomadation was excellant, with so many owners making us feel right at home. I must admit to being very wary at the start because B&B's are not common here in Australia- people tend to stay in Motels and it was all a bit strange staying in someones home to me, but in 14 weeks I only struck 2 I was not all that happy with. However, I just thought it would be a lot more interesting for my next trip if I could stay somewhere where there was a common interest, as I am a regular volunteer myself.

    Anybody know of any?
