A Twin Evening Star… and it isn't No. 92214

    Two BR green locomotives, both carrying the identity Evening Star with a commemorative plaque underneath their nameplates, could be seen under the same roof at the National Railway Museum on April 10.

    The occasion was the naming of GB Railfreight Class 66 diesel No. 66779, the last example of a 480-strong class to be built in North America. Its name and BR lined green livery pay homage to another famous ‘last’ engine – ‘9F’ No. 92220, the final steam locomotive built for British Railways in 1960. Now part of the National Collection, the heavy freight 2-10-0 took pride of place on the turntable during the ceremony.

    A third locomotive to have carried the name Evening Star is BR green-liveried ‘9F’ No. 92214, which has masqueraded as No. 92220 at the Great Central Railway.
