On what evidence do you base that claim?

Along with the others above, I've never heard such a story. All magazine articles that I've read and the Duke's website(s) have all talked about recreating the cylinders from the works drawings - there has never been mention of any use of the original as a pattern.

If I were making replacement parts from drawings, and the original parts existed, I would use the original bits as a reference to double check the drawing would actually work.

Interesting as this conversation is, I had forgotten that I was reading the 563 thread and not the 71000 thread.

Could I suggest the Mods move this elsewhere?

    Interesting email from Ben/Vintage Trains...

Following completion of overhaul, 71000 is to be based at Tyseley for the duration of its 10 year ticket and will also run under Tyseley’s new TOC as it’s primary operator.

Also reported in SR this month, along with a suggestion that the Grange will likewise be closely linked with VT's.

With Tyseley's three Castles and a Hall and that 71000 is expected to appear on the Shakespeares along with the more appropriate 6880 maybe Vintage Trains could expand the frequency of the Shakespeares running to Stratford.

Tyseley could have quite a stable then, castles, halls. 71000 and maybe a grange thrown in too. Bplenty of choice for haulage

Probably no hope for Kolhapur now.

I suppose VT can't do everything at once. A Kolhapur back on the main line would be a real asset to VT with good RA and far more appropriate on VT excursions to Leicester and York.
