It’s great to see that 70013 is almost back together now. It will be great to see her back on the main line again but will we see her visiting other preserved lines around the country over the next ten years or not.
I ask his question because I have not seen The Super D 49395 come down south yet. This would be a great loco to see at the MHR or Swanage or Blue Bell.
I have read that 70013 will only visit the East Lances is this right.

    Thanks

If a railway puts in a loan request , it will be entertained and discussed.

There does seem to be something though in NRM engines which aren't Southern (Well tank, Q1) don't venture down south. The Super D is one but Green Arrow never ventured south often, and its disappointing Lamiel and Nelson haven't seen more use on Preserved lines in the South where they are more accessible than they are on the mainline

The V2 spent a season down south, 850 spent most of its mainline workings in the south and 777 has only recently returned to steam though I did hear there are gauaging issues or something for her.
We only got 2 galas and a midweek test run to see 850 up north too.

I'm referring to visits by 850 to preserved lines, not the mainline, as it is on preserved lines where she is more accessible by the public. 30777 visited Bluebell in early 1990s I think, but apart from that what? 850 I believe has never visted anywhere. 4472 hasn't done anything in the south bar VSOE since 1960s. V2 visited Bluebell for a few weeks but apart from that don't recall ever hearing of anything.

Note I'm talking more South East here, as in former Southern territory

I think that with Scotsman out of private ownership it will be a possibility now that it could return to preserved lines once it has earned it's keep on the mainline. Don't forget the NRM wants it's moneys worth out of her since they have spent a fortune to buy her and restore her.

Mind you the NRM chaps seem nice enough so anything possible and it would be something to see Nelson in SR Green pulling the Bluebells rake of SR coaches.

As said before, visits are not a case of us saying "oh, we'd like to go there". It's seen as a loan and anyone can request such by writing to the Loans Officer at York - there is no North or South about anything, loans are public access as you say and thus good for us to do, as long as they are practical.

As usual Stepney is writing complete rubbish

What he really means by publicly accessible is that the Bluebell volunteers can have a hands on, and that the Bluebell can sell gala tickets

On one day's mainline outing a loco will pass, and be waved at by several tens of times the numbers of general public who would see it on any preserved line in one day.

And before anyone accuses me of being anti branch line - I'm not, or I wouldn't have been to three several times this year - but for public visibility its main line both as regards passing through population centres and seeing a loco in full flight, not pottering about at twenty five miles an hour.

Think before you hit the keyboard Stepney

    Yes forgot about that

OK changing tack what is the policy of the NRM of mainline engines on low loaders? I know Senor Riley has qualms about it but would the NRM allow engines like Nelson and Lamiel to be put on a lorry?

Putting mainline locos on low loaders isn't that good as they affect the calibration of certain pieces of equipment with having to separate loco and tender.

Depends on the loco - a Western does not like ramps, but all the others have been on lorries in the past, 777 and 850 included. Those engines on the GCR have been on & off certainly!

I do agree with Chris, I'd love to see 70013 come to the Bluebell and it's identity changed to Iron Duke and paired with the Pullmans. As for mainline excursions in the south east, well we get absolutely naff all mainliners down this way i.e. Eastbourne, Brighton, Hastings. Having looked at the mainline excursion web page there's not one single excursion booked to come down this way for the entire year! [-X

From what I've heard Mr Riley won't let any loco go on a low-loader due to mechnical problems that may arise which I guess is fair enough but such a shame that until the Bluebell get to E.G. we wont see locos such as Tangmere pulling a rake of green Bullied coaches.

Lets hope when the T9 is back in steam she can go to other railways in the south of England.

It would be ACE to see her back at the MHR,Swanage,BlueBell and GWR.

As I said before - it only needs a letter asking for a loan of said engine - no hoping about it, the question just has to be asked.

Won't be on until late Tuesday now, got a busy weekend on. Thanks for the welcome here so far folks.

    Cheers

Dont want to rain on your parade, but some years ago the NRM had a policy of not allowing any National Collection loco to assume the identity of something it never was.

In the early 90s, I was involved with a charter with the LNWR 0-8-0 at Butterley, and for a night shoot wanted to renumber it, but the NRM said no.

Maybe Anthony can advise if this is still NRM policy?

As for tours in the south, I have a feeling Steam Dreams has its eye on 'Cromwell'.

I believe the Q1 ran as different members of the class when at the Bluebell, 33008 springs to mind, but I'm not 100% on that, and as it was a long term loan whether there are different rules
