Latest issue of the Railway magazine as a small piece on Royal Scot and says it will be mainline tested before Christmas.

Sadly, we ain't likley see any such accounts! More's the pity, because in all honesty if a way could be found to publish an accurate account of what went wrong here, maybe there would be some good lessons for all of us to learn...........?

Apparently she's waiting for 70000 to be finished off before her own work is completed - recent pictures would suggest this is the case.

    Re: 6100 Royal Scot..Progress 2010.

Considering the original Royal Scot thread started in 2008, and the locomotive has still not met its date with destiny on the mainline, surely questions of the extent of the overhaul at Southall must now be made in the railway press?

As far as I can see from the previous thread (and this one), the problems being sorted out/have been sorted out by LNWR Crewe:

    1. Worn Valve Gear
    2. Incorrectly welded Steam Pipes
    3. Driving wheels out of true
    4. Incompatible Threads on steam fittings
    5. New Cylinder cover and associated Piston repairs

There's more I have probably missed besides, but the point of the matter is that the above were deemed acceptable to Southall when Royal Scot initially was revealed. How on earth could this machine be described as fit for purpose? Pete Waterman's team deserve all the plaudits for taking the job on, frankly, if the reports on Nat Pres (and elsewhere) are correct. I only have to look at Flying Scotsman to see the mirror image in terms of problems: a confirmation of sorts that all has not been well in the fortunes of these two locomotives.

Sadly I think that the full details of the 'restoration' will never be known, I suspect that too many heads would roll. However should a magazine investigate (if that is the right word) what happened at Southall I'd gladly admit that I am wrong.

This is incompetence indeed .I did not know of these problems i knew about the driving wheels out of true not the rest and you say there maybe more.We are lucky indeed to have Pete Waterman and his team at Crewe.

The alleged horrors of mismanagement and finances of certain locos are well known to many but it is a brave person that goes into print without provable facts to back it up. I've had it said to me by one editor that he'd like to go there but the magazine's solicitors have always said no.

Dont forget Pete Waterman and his team at Crewe are getting paid to do the work.

Im sure the whole fiasco will make others think long and hard before commiting to spend many thousands of pounds to basically keep us enthusiasts happy.

Bit of an oversimplification, frankly. I am sure the business reasons for running a steam locomotive on the mainline, concentrate on more than just attracting the enthusiast. In any event - the question was, will it make the dates? As far as I can see, the information out there suggests there's a lot more work to do.

    Calmly await events.

Steam loco restoration i think it is fair to say is increasingly like pouring money into a bottomless pit , with little hope of raising enough over the ticket to fund the next overhaul which is likely to cost upwards of £500k

That groups and individuals strive to overcome these odds is to be applauded but how much longer can and will it go on ?

How much money was spent by the restoration team on the bottom end before Crewe's bills land on the mat ?

I think it's fair to say that very few if any locos generate a real return for the owner from steaming fees alone and in many cases it's only the input of volunteers and alternative funding on top of hire fees that makes running them viable. I recall speaking to the owner of one main line loco and he said that it didn't make him a profit but as long as he could afford to make up the difference out of his own pocket, he would continue to run her so I think that says how "profitable" owning a loco can be.

They certainley dont run their locos on the mainline to make money. They do it because they want to, and us the enthusisats should be jolly well pleased they do.
I know for a fact that Bressingham wished they have never touched the thing, not only because of all money its cost them but the fact so many people have taken great delight in telling them where they went wrong.

Having spent a shedload of money on it and it's hardly run, perhaps those people have a point?
