    clone. verb (used with object)
to produce a copy or imitation of.

Not many copy's or imitations of GWR engines about then.
    All the real thing.

Perhaps there is a limit to what you would wish to clone... :tape:

    Re: 6100 Royal Scot..Progress 2010.

I must confess, the more I hear about that which has gone wrong with Royal Scot, and the problems that keep being found, every so often, with Scotsman, the more I'm inclined (at the very least, given the minimal if not non-existant press coverage of Royal Scot) to think that the common denominator in both locomotives is Southall. Whilst there's a lot that's been said in a previous thread on here, most of it was arguing back and forth between various parties, and little factual information.

I suspect we shall have to wait years and years before anything of the years at Southall can or will be told, but I find it remarkable that two locomotives - one red, one green, can both develop similar faults in the assembly of their frames and driving wheels, at similar periods, and it is from these problems that the real extra cost to steam these engines has arisen. Would it be fair to point the finger at Southall? No, not without all the facts to hands, and both sides of the debate giving their thoughts in a constructive manner. But sadly, the likelihood of that seems minimal at best.

If it were this livery - the "correct" or as damn-near close to it shade, as this:

    CIMG9575.jpg

Then I wonder if the amount of complaints about the livery Royal Scot currently wears, would be halved? I certainly would prefer to see this glorious, deep in colour livery on her, whatever the historical accuracy, than the pinkish hue I had the misfortune to photograph while at the Llangollen over a year ago...

I wish Jeremy Hosking and the Crewe team the very best of luck with the engine, and hope nothing else comes up that puts the engine's return back. At the very least, even if you disagree with the colour or the way it's been handled the last few years, I think we'd all love to see it steam on the mainline again. :)

Martin, to be honest the story will never be made public, there are too many vested interests to ensure that this will be the case, but like you say its very telling that 4472 and 6100 have been found to need far more work than was thought necessary in both cases you have to look at the planing and how the work was regulated to get your answer but its old news now, what is important is this, that no one seems to have grasped, the new owning trust can still turn to bressingham to pay for the cost of these extra repairs , its written into the agreement i believe, so you have to ask how will this impact on bressinhams fortune if the trust do infact present them with a bill at the end that they cant pay?

With no disrespect to who ever has been involved in the past, we are now fortunate in the facilities available ( albeit at a price) to those restoring/servicing/ building steam locomotives at this current time. At least we can at least diagnose and rectify these problems(albeit at a price). Lets not get into a botched job slaggin match when people probably did as good a job with the money and facilities available (to them) at the time.

Some traditional skills and know how have been lost, others continue to be relearned. Hey- You can get portable optical lining up and measuring devices of the shelf at b&q which would have been space age in the 1980's...

    Re: 6100 Royal Scot..Progress 2010.

I'm quite sure a Zeiss Optical Device was used at Swindon as far back as the 1930s? It's not a question we can ask in any event: we won't be told, therefore speculation as to what may have been/not used is irrelevant.

The fact remains, that both locomotives were overhauled at Southall under the guidance of Roland Kennington, and both have turned out under new ownership with further (similar) problems in their latest overhauls. That Royal Scot was first relaunched in early 2009, and has yet to turn a wheel on the mainline, does lend itself to rampant speculation.

Whatever the actual case, we all want to see it on the mainline soon enough.

And good on Pete Waterman and LNWR Crewe for taking her on - if the end product is anything like Britannia, she'll be well worth the wait in the end.

The Severn Valley locomotive department have some optical equipment that is, I think, ex-Doncaster Works gear.

The uninformed speculation here will be even more lurid, is my prediction

On the Clan Line thread, it mentions that the loco and tender were reunited on Friday just gone.

Excellent news - hopefully some decent pics in due course too :)

And perhaps a rather shifty repaint into something more appropriate... ;)

A contentious issue, but you never know now ownership has been transferred. As it's only run in this guise for a limited period, we'll probably have to grin and bear the LMS 'pinky-lake' for a while yet. But at least the owning trust should now have greater freedom in this respect in future.

has the cracked cylinder cover been sorted then? lets hope that the trust now begin to have some luck with this engine because if it takes any longer it will be time for its major boiler exam before it gets to run again

    Re: 6100 Royal Scot..Progress 2010.

Absolutely. The thing is, I'm not against it being painted in LMS Crimson Lake - it's historically relevant to its class, and as the namesake of the entire class, I feel it has some right to wearing it. What I objected to, at the time (and still do, to some extent) was the idea that the "Butlins livery" - which was not well recreated this time around if I am honest - would be that applied to the locomotive when it came out for the first time in - was it 2008? :confused1:

If it were that which can be seen on Leander, or Duchess of Hamilton, then I'd be more than happy to see LMS Crimson Lake on Royal Scot, full historical authenticity or not. Of course, it has never been up to me, or anyone not involved with the locomotive, what livery it should be painted, but if you are going to make it wear a certain livery, getting it right is a hundred times better than getting it wrong.

After all - at least Flying Scotsman (the other can of worms) always looks like it's in a decent shade of Apple Green, whatever form it appears in (and even that is not so contentious as Royal Scot, Humorist having appeared in LNER livery with a double chimney).

But, I am repeating myself. I am glad to hear it's in steam, hopefully it will be tidied up and going mainline within the next few months, earning its keep and adding another worthy performer to the mainline roster. :peace:
