58023 Restarted

58023 has been restarted at the Battlefield line this week bringing the first working 58 in this country since 2004?? nearer,There is a short clip to view on youtube if you fancy just put in 58023, good news Well done to all

There's something about watching an old diesel wake from its slumbers that gives me a warm fuzzy glow inside

 

year of manufacture? How much work was needed on the prime mover before startup? That's good for any old locomotive to wake up again! What is her HP?

They were some of the last locomotives built by British Rail. Some are still operating overseas as they were sent to France and Spain to use on the building of high speed lines over there; but most were withdrawn in the UK over 10 years ago and have sat around doing nothing.

 

You may be right, I'm not sure what the situation is.

 

Few years ago now, is it running yet?

 

It's been moved to Leicester along with 58016 for further engine work on contract basis but it's being done as time allows so it's a slow slog

Sorry to dig up an old thread. I noticed 58023 failed at the Swanage gala this last weekend.

The following is said without any implied criticism of those who look after her, because they know far more about these complex machines that I could ever dream of doing.

But I found myself wondering - has 58023 made it through a full booked gala appearance yet? I can remember it working with a Class 20 at the SVR last year I think, but that aside I’m sure it has failed during or been withdrawn prior to each of the other events it was due to attend.

I’m well aware that the Class 58 was a cutting edge machine at the time of its introduction and yet I imagine it now suffers from using mainly obsolete electronics and possibly requires very specialist knowledge so will be more difficult to maintain than, say, a Class 37.

Just wondering what the plan for the 58 is in the long term? I can't imagine one or two gala appearances per year is enough to earn its keep and I would have thought it might have benefitted from more regular runnign but that would require being based at a heritage line which operates air/dual-braked stock which somewhat limits its options.

 

The problems with this particular loco spring from (no pun intended) the Cooler Group (radiators etc). They gave her issues at the SVR last year, and did so again at Swanage last weekend.

 

Thanks, is that an issue with the class generally, or just seems to be a problem for 23?

 

This is the problem that's afflicting 58023. I can't vouch for the other class members, back in the day.
