5239's boiler has now had all it's small tubes fitted. Fitting of the crown stays in the Firebox continues as does the assembly of components on the frames. The pictures attached show the tubed boiler from the smokebox end and the frames in the workshop. Remember progress on the overhaul can be seen from the workshop's viewing gallery at the ESR's Spring Steam Gala on March 23/4.[IMG][IMG]

The coupling rods have been refitted following careful alignment of the wheel centres and refurbishment of the rod bearings. Many fittings have also been fitted to the frames including the newly fabricated bunker. Over the last weekend the flue tubes were fitted in the boiler and a start has been made on test fitting the boiler cladding.

This blog is really first class, and the images of rarely seen bits like the inclined planes on the rear axle and spherical bearings on the coupling rod joints are excellent and very educative. It would be good to have a more permanent record.

On 14th June the boiler had a successful hydraulic test which was witnessed by the boiler inspector. Since then a fire has been lit and steam raised. The formal steam test will take place shortly. The link in my previous post above continues to be updated.

Always heart warming to hear that a fire has been lit in a favourite loco! ;)

5239 passed it's out of frames steam test on Thursday and has now been painted in preparation for lagging and cladding. The superheater header and elements have also been hydraulic tested. Work on the frames continues as ever too.[IMG][IMG][IMG]

Following the successful out of frames hydraulic and steam tests we are now progressing with preparing the boiler for re-installation onto the frames.

Hasn't been posted here yet but the tanks were refitted a couple of weeks ago and the final fittings are now being put back on the loco in preparation for steaming.[IMG][IMG][IMG]

The state of play with 5239 as of Saturday 28th. Almost all of the cab pipework that can be seen is new and making this has been the major project over the past few weeks. [IMG][IMG][IMG]

Third photo down. On 7200 the handle of the reversing lever is bent backwards which I had up to now regarded as accident damage of some sort. This one is the same so can only conclude that it is meant to be like that, presumably to give clearance between it and something else. What is the 'something else'?

It’s so that it clears the tank /cab front.

5239 in steam today 2 years to the week since it arrived at Cranmore. There's a video of the first move on the ESR's Facebook page. (2 photos are not mine)[IMG][IMG]

Delighted to see this beauty back in action. I remember many visits to Paington as a small child on family holidays in Devon, Goliath was the first steam loco whose name I learned and was my favourite for many years growing up! I would dearly love to get my hands on her at the GCRN, but will settle for knowing she is alive and kicking down in Somerset and eventually Devon

Well done to all concerned. Is it likely to be out and about next weekend?
