On the 24th January 45690 was booked to double head with 45699 but it seems 45407 is now in it's place. Does anybody know why please ?

Is 45407 said to be instead of 90 or 99?

The owner of 5407 forecast as much several weeks ago. Shame for the customers booking for the pair of jubs especially if its been known for many weeks not to be that pairing.
Is it because 99 is undergoing a transformation perhaps?

Many years ago 76079 plus cash was offered in exchange for 45690 by the current owner of 45407. An irony that it's now heading out in the probable livery it would have had if the deal had been done and paired with its putative stablemate.

OK, I had wrongly thought that the WCME would be a Riley pair as in previous years.

The main difference as far as the 24th January WCME is concerned will be the substitution of a 60 mph authorised vmax locomotive with 6 foot driving wheels in place of 75 mph authorised vmax locomotive with 6 foot 9 inch driving wheels.

For the return segment of the WCME's itinerary, via the S & C, this won't make a blind bit of difference, because of the ruling 60 mph limit over the Carlisle - Hellifield section (and lower 45 mph limit thence on to Blackburn). But on the outward leg, I would imagine that this could make a material difference to performance over the WCML, particularly on favourable sections between Preston-Carnforth, Grayrigg-Tebay, and Shap-Carlisle.

So the substitution is probably not worth a lot of "fuss"; but I would guess that it might be important to the train timing fraternity as well as the Jubilee fan club.

My apologies but it now seems it's 45699 that's been replaced by 45407.
That's twice I've booked to go behind it for it to be replaced by a 5. Still, worth it though. Long live mainline steam !

Strangely it seems to have been known for many weeks unofficially that 99 wouldn't be on the 24 Jan train. While those wanting a historic trip behind 2 Jubilees for the first time in nearly 50 years do have another option at the moment (7/3) it is poor because it seems it was never likely to be the 2 in January so why advertise for so long?
Still a good pairing and probably nicer looking for pictures but doesn't have the same rarity value.
Maybe its a contractual thing that one of the Riley 5s is on the first WCME each year.
