If 35011 is to be restored, do we assume that Jeremy Hosking is providing a replacement coupled wheelset and axle for this locomotive to replace that donated to Braunton? Certainly missing on the photos on wsr.org

You have taken the words right out of my mouth, or will they be doing something with Braunton's old wheelset for 35011?

Bongo comments above that GSN was going north up the M5, however the wsr.org website now says GSN is going to Sellinge in Kent. Bongo's sighting would tend to put that in doubt unless my geography is faulty!

Depends whereabouts on the M5. Leaving Taunton heading north it would still, technically, be heading towards Birmingham!

I'm putting 2 and 2 together and probably making 5, but:

Mr Hoskins owns the kit of parts, known as 35022, so maybe one of its wheels will be going under 35011 as a replacement for that given to 34046. Then if 35022 is ever restored a new wheel will have to be made or that from 34046 be re-engineered.

After all, isn't 35022 supplying its boiler to 35027?

But then turn right down the M4 - next stop Kent maybe?

No more sightings? Has it been vaporised or abducted by aliens?

I can't recall exactly where I passed it. Somewhere around Gloucester/Worcester I think. I was on my way back from Plymouth. It was dark and was right alongside before I realised it was an engine on the trailer, and not easy to identify either. It must have been 35011 because the centre driving wheelset was out. Very late for an abnormal load of that size to be on the move. Maybe it was on the way to Allely's own yard, which is in that area. Or maybe a mistake by wsr.org?

M4 is way off Kent! Try the M25 and then the M20 and you might not be far off...

I would go with you're conclusion on this Bhallett - So could be that they are going to be making a positive start on 35011, and then the boiler later on from 35027, once the major repairs have been made will be used for her?

Clearly if it turned off down the M4 then it wouldn't be going north any more and could well have ended up in Kent.

Why didn't he just put the wheels from 35022 under 34046 in that case, and cut out the middleman?

I believe it is because 35011 had a wheelset from a WC/MN, which are different from that of a MN. How 35011 came to have the wheelset I do not know.

Bongo is probably correct, maybe going to Allely's yard overnight, or a little longer depending on delivery arrangements in Kent.

Better than going back to Binbrook I guess.

Slightly off-topic, but I wish someone with deep pockets and LMS leanings would make the owner an offer for the "Crab"....

Because restored, it would be suitable for regular use on either the SVR or the K & WVR, and we are relatively short on ex-LMS engines in the preservation world, an accident of "Barry" of course.
I know how bad the engine is reputed to be, hence my use of the words "deep pockets".

The reason I asked, is that it seems to me that there are too many people on the sidelines sniping and heckling, without actually knowing very much and often to the detriment of particular projects. I'm not saying you are one of those - but if the cap fits...

It does grate a bit in certain quarters, as the discussion in another thread recently regarding 44123 bears witness.

By simply saying 'how bad the engine is reputed to be' is not really adding very much, apart from perpetuating the rumour mill. I doubt you know much about the project or the condition of it at all.

As it happens, it is not really a glamour engine, and those with deep pockets, as you put it, will set their sights somewhat higher. As far as I know the intention was always to restore it as a companion to 45305, and if it wasn't for the enforced move from Dairycoates it would have been done by now. As has been mentioned a few times on this site before - a victim of circumstances - and how often does that happen. I don't think anyone would want their engines to sit around doing nothing, but if you feel strongly about it, why don't you just go and get involved? Action speaks louder than words, etc.

Maybe it's a bit unfair to pick on one posting and on one particular locomotive. But I think it's a good example of the muddled thinking that goes on amongst armchair type enthusiasts that don't really contribute much, but have plenty to say about how they think other people should conduct their projects. I could name a dozen or more projects which are progressing ever so slowly and could do with some more resources, and no doubt that one could be added to the list.
