I was at Bury today and I can confirm that 34073 has left. Where it has gone, I do not know.

Most likely north of Bury would be Carnforth.

If this means another Squadron returning to steam eventually then I for one will be delighted.

Seems a logical short term answer 61624, but only if there are other benefits too! This could possibly include longer term overhaul plans, possible boiler overhaul and swap to turn Tangmere round quickly at next overhaul, but also maybe due to ELR storage costs and there's also the added bonus (to the owner) of getting it out of the public eye and into more secure accomodation. The cost of hiring a flatbed if the intention is just to remove additional valve gear parts wouldn't make sense for obvious financial reasons.

Wasn't there a rumour a few years ago that someone had bought 34073 to restore to mainline running order?

Is it confirmed it touched down at Carnforth ?, could have ended up at somewhere like Appleby East if cost/space factors dictated it's removal from the Lancs.

It wouldn't take very many forged valve gear parts to justify the cost of movement, but there are other parts, as you say, that may be of use. The boiler is an obvious one, but what are the wheelsets like as well?

Looking at the track and ground it is sat on, it almost looks like it's been there for ages!

Possibly, but I bet it's still for sale ... at the right price.
