I'm planning my weekends for the first few months of next year - trying to co-ordinate dates with various friends, work, family etc. Very surprised that many major railways, including my locals at Swanage and Mid Hants, don't have 2013 timetables up. Is it normal to leave it this late, or am I being unreasonable again?

Don't know the Bluebell timetable for certain, but I am pretty sure that we will be doing our usual 2-train, hourly service (Sheffield Park departures from 11am hourly to 4pm) each weekend from the beginning of the year until we open to East Grinstead. Date for that is still not officially announced, but 24/25 March is one likely candidate, IMHO.

I consider it normal for some (usually smaller) railways to get into the new year before the full 2013 timetable comes out. On the other hand, for other railways it sees to be able to be a done deal by about October the year before? I think this one might have a "lengths of string" element to it :)

it's not so much timetables, more when the special events are to be scheduled for.

The Mid Hants printed timetable for 2013 is available as of yesterday, so I am suprised that the on-line one isn't up yet. I will pick up one later today if I can

Are you going to be furiously laying track panels as fast as you can as the engine steams along the line? (Thinks: There's an idea to pay for the last bit of the Bluebell's northern extension...)

Crikey! Better avoid Alresford that weekend...

WSR and GWSR both have 2013 timetables on their websites.

24/25 March is Sunday and Monday? I assume that you mean 23/24 March (which does, of course, clash with both the WSR and SVR SSGs).

Well, the nation's enthusiasts can go and see some identikit green things with twiddly brass bits, or else see some real engines working up a real hill that weekend then ! :peep:

Seriously, yes I did mean the Saturday / Sunday. That date certainly isn't confirmed, and I suspect it won't be until quite near the date. But if we are going to open in March, it is my reading of the most likely opening date, though it looks like festivities will probably go on for a couple of weeks all told.

Has anyone noticed that on the NR website the current timetables are headed Dec 2012 to May 2013? You can find the forthcoming timetables with a bit of effort but it's sloppy work on NR's part.

That's interesting, certainly. The name "Family Pass" gives me pause, though: with many "family tickets" on buses and NR trains, you must have at least one child in your party, but it's not clear whether that's the case with the SVR. Clearly, this pass would be more useful if it were valid for single adults and couples without accompanying children. (In my case, I'm sometimes accompanied and sometimes not.)

It's also potentially interesting for those of us who have local resident's railcards and were hoping to renew them for 2013, since the on-the-day child fare (which is what residents pay, or at least did in 2012) is going up by almost 30% next year, a much larger rise than the adult fare. That's such a big hike that it might actually be worthwhile even moderate travellers like me getting the annual pass instead.
