2 locos to id please

fascinating pics, clearly sister locos.

 

RUMNEY

Appears to be an early Sharp Stewart design delivered to the Brecon & Merthyr Rly in 1872 as BMR 28 RUMNEY. Confusion is caused by the fact that the locos were disposed of by 1905 and replaced by newer locomotives bearing the same BMR numbers and names (e.g. 1896 built BMR 28 RUMNEY supplied by Kitson, Nasmyth, Wilson) hence when the company was absorbed by the GWR in 1921 it was the latter locomotives which ran with GWR numbers.

PONTYPOOL

Similar to RUMNEY as detailed above BUT I can find no info relating to PONTYPOOL; at the time of delivery to the BMR the company identified its locomotives by names and I have not been able to find details of a locomotive with that name. The similarity of the two locomotives suggests that they were built around the same time. Just to complicate matters more the B&MR was one of many companies serving the Neath Valleys and which was subject to change whilst the firm of Sharp Stewart was originally based in Manchester but moved to Atlas works Glasgow where it later became part of the North British Loco conglomerate.

 

PONTYPOOL was built by Sharp, Stewart & Co, at their Atlas Works, in Manchester in 1866 (works no. 1677) for use on the Brecon & Merthyr Railway. However following their operating contractors (TOC) Savin & Ward going bust, it was not delivered, and instead sold to the Ebbw Vale Co for use on the West Somerset Mineral Railway, which took iron ore from their mine in Somerset down to the coast at Watchet.

RUMNEY appears to be another of the locomotives of this batch of six ordered for use on the Brecon & Merthr Railway. Four were delivered to the B&M, the other two were not.

I live very near the Atlas works, it was finally demolished just a few weeks ago. I had no idea they'd built locomotives there. It was a handsome building, a sad loss.
