After a lot of soul searching I’ve just renewed my membership. £60 is a lot to pay for four poor magazines a year ( I get free travel in any case) but I do want the railway to survive and prosper and being a member is one way to support it.

I don't want to reopen the debate on charitable objectives but, since the latest ones were devised and the railway imported people from the wider heritage sector, including a GM with no railway background, and consultants obsessed with how to be...

Before risking going down what might be a nihilistic path, can I suggest that someone suggests that all the senior management and Trust Board members read the last hundred or so posts on here and all sit down in a single room, try to work out...

A couple of points. First, on grants, I was using that language for payments from Trust to PLC, nothing more. Second, and reinforced by the first, I am now an outsider. I am not proposing to participate in a campaign to change NYMR, but I am...

Typing this just with my anecdotal thoughts from attending plenty of diesel galas until 1995 and then since 2012, rather than the kind of firm tangible sales data that railways will be working from, but I think that fickle element might be...

I try to avoid criticising people and if I fail, I apologise. The vast majority of those working on the NYMR are very pleasant people who you would be quite happy to know socially. What I am critical of is the way the Railway is being managed...

I think they reinforce the heritage and preservation characteristics of the line. They were certainly well liked and the LNERCA had a deserved prominence in the railway. The buffet was very useful. These carriages would've been seen on the King's...

I think marketing at heritage railways is an interesting problem. Because of the structure of the organisation there are lots of awkward situations of interaction between paid staff and volunteers, some of which are not very sleek. I agree that...

Entirely agree regarding the Teak set hopefully receiving repairs. It was one of the line's real selling points when I was volunteering and it's withdrawal from regular use was a thoroughly retrograde step. I'm sure the intent to reduce the...

A seasoned accountant said to me a while ago "any business that relies on grant funding, is destined for failure, it should rely on its own funding, and any grant funding should be seen as icing on the cake"...
