Not sure why, but a friend on portering duty at Ropley today has advised me 35005 is in steam and NOT 4247 as expected. Glad I didn't make the effort to go down today after all.

I think the other side to consider too is that overhauling something and then using it hard means your next overhaul will be another expensive one. 30506 has had needed a fair bit of work and my impression there is concern it might not make it to...

There seems to be a misinterpretation that "too large for normal services" means "we don't want it". What the article is meant to highlight is getting a balance between locos with "star" power to interest Joe Public, and the economical ones...
