I dont think that "they" were around when Thomas last appeared on the railway. It was after all 30 years ago, 1996, now that he was last here. Peter

You would think that a fireman would know - The harder the engine is worked the harder he/she has to work:). Peter

Well, that surprises me - my entirely subjective experience is that 80151 seems lighter work! Tom

The NYMR doesn't need the teak coaches; that's true, but they sure as heck should want them.

Now if only we still had that superb GN Saloon to go with it - it looks an absolute treat serving up market cream teas on another railway now, but that would seem to be a railway with the vision that is sadly lacking on the NYMR these days. Peter

If you do the sums, 76079 is better suited to the NYMR than a Black 5 and, in terms of tractive effort, it has pretty much the same as a Black 5 in hand on 7 coach trains. Why better suited? A Black 5 weighs more and that extra weight has to be...

Not wrong there, Peter. Oil firing can be used on copper boxes but they tend to suffer more as a result as flame temperatures can reach well over 2000degC and even with protective refractory insulation, they will feel it. You don't get blue...

I think that you need to think carefully which locos are suitable (in their current form) for conversion to oil firing. S160s, yes- WD 2-10-0s yes- Bulleid Pacifics yes - but the rest, I'm not so sure. As I understand it, the rapid temperature...

Seat? They are for the old codger known as the driver. Those of us at the coal face think the "fireman's seat" is where the footplate passenger goes to be out of the way - but when there are two people to occupy it it doesn't work very well:(....

That's all very well for the driver but makes life very difficult for the fireman. The driver stays in one place but the firemans job entails him moving about the cab, needing room to swing his shovel and also keep a good lookout from his side of...
