We've figured out how to move the bolt. I hadn't realised it was hinged at one end. So a number of the windows in the coach are now open. Just arrived in Paignton. Torbay Airshow in full flow. Saw the Red Arrows.

In Worcester, considering how much rain there was overnight I was amazed how dry the roads and everything else is this morning. Only real change here is that rather than just hot it is now hot and muggy!

The trade off is on a busy day, when the extra income from these customers needs to be weighed up against the possible lost income from people unable to be served in timely fashion

The catering team at Toddington was under a lot of pressure when I visited but were coping. Not sure what it would have been like if several “walk ins” had joined the throng.

The SVR and the GWSR are very different railways in many ways though. I can understand the GWSR not wanting to dilute from its main income stream at events whilst allowing free access at most other times for visitors to spend as you suggest.

Visitors paying full admission also make that spend. All a £5 platform ticket does is deprive the railway of £35 revenue from the admission price, the bulk of which I suspect is contributing to the cost of staging the event.

Try turning up at a football match or a steam rally* and say “I’m only after a cup of tea and a piece of cake” and see if you can get in for a fiver. *Other types of events are available.

Without comment on whether site access should or shouldn't be supported, I don't expect admission at an event based on what I did 3 weeks ago unless there's an explicit deal.

Before the GWSR gets a kicking for this , MHR did similar for their gala . if it is day rover ticket only it then the stations and their attractions are only available to those paying for said rover. is the income gained should a platform ticket...
