Another good day with five at work on Wednesday. A lot of time was spent weld repairing the buffer shanks on the North end of #733. This was very old damage which was largely hidden under many coats of paint! The inside had its bitumastic coating...

  3. Flying Phil liked martin1656's post in the thread Bridge that Gap: Great Central Railway News.

Having a long loop on the approach to the station makes sense, because it would enable a train to be held awaiting either a platform, or to head out over the viaduct, and enable either platform to be used. Or even to clear the road if you're...

  6. Flying Phil replied to the thread 30777 to be overhauled.

Work on 777 had been paused whilst there was a possible asbestos investigation. Now work has been restarted but the bogie is still not replaced under the tender. I think the boiler work has been done in terms of rivetting, but it still needs all...

  7. Flying Phil replied to the thread 70013.

In the shed yesterday 70013 was still boilerless. Interestingly the crossheads were off the engine, I wonder if they were being given a more thorough examination following the failure on 70000?

  10. Flying Phil replied to the thread Bridge that Gap: Great Central Railway News.

What a great way to start the day! This viaduct makes so much sense! The GCR went on viaducts through Leicester and elsewhere and is a classic image. It also explains why the engine shed will need to be relocated. To have a single track...

  12. Flying Phil replied to the thread Windcutter Wagons.

Hi Chris - yes we had 24 wagons from Rover Cars Ltd in 1992, then a further 5 in 1997. Despite being "Empty" there was a lot of compacted rust, swarf and scrap small parts of all sorts left in many of them. I'm sure scrap large castings, engine...
