Yes the diesel was needed for the reversal into Portsmouth but it seemed unnecessary at Milford when '28 is more than capable of running to maximum speed on that stretch with that load. Perhaps the fireman wanted a well-earned breather...

Have not a lot of the York tours reverse at Gascoigne Wood on the way back south? Plus of course most DCE's & Swanage Belle's used to reverse in Southampton UDGL.
