I doubt it makes much difference to the conditions for the staff on platforms, ticket offices, signal boxes, guards vans etc, as to what is pulling the train. Not to mention the passengers

Isn't the purpose of a railway to run trains? OK, it can't run in the afternoon, but at least it runs trains and people get to ride on them

That's what threw me - I thought they were using Merseyrail third rail. Mind you, perhaps sticking a flat panel on the roof and a cheeky pantograph would improve it's usability...

But those lines are affected now, and they can't do anything about it. It's not just in the South East. I've seen comments on GSWR blogs about encroaching development, the SVR have had issues with new housing behind the engine shed etc etc...

Although it's dull, it's (another) elephant in the room. Development is happening, whether it should or should not is outside the scope of this forum. Probably in part becuase preserved railways bring in money and interest, but any railway...
