there is a point though , the railway has had fabulous publicity with the FA Cup and now this . by April the risk is people will have moved on . Timing is everything and I understand the why the railway is not running

It's only for a few months, and if I was that desperate to see a rebuilt light pacific in green during that time, there's always Eddystone...

Some rather predictable and rather tiresome responses on here and across social media channels , from the burning the membership card brigade , Have a laugh at the railways expense (lamentably from some of its own self proclaimed supporters) to I suspect a few calling for heads to roll .

Its a coat of paint that, who knows the owner maybe funding , to mark a very special occasion in british history . It puts the SVR into the national media for a good news story and probably buys coverage that you wouldn't otherwise ever pay for . By the autumn it is back into BR livery and alls well again

    With

    'Purple dinosaur class'

    On the scrolls...

Are we not allowed to express our opinions if we don't like it then?

TV does seem to be subject to the colourful treatment more than most, whether it be real or April Fools...

that is a response that cuts both ways as you object to my point . Conversation is the spice of life , lame old jokes and burning at the stake , it would be nice to move on from

Thanks Patrick but I did say that footfall "Will increase". The Return on Marketing Investment (Which I assume you mean by ROMI) must be good, as the cost of the extra repaint back to Green will be significantly less than the £20K hinted at and the spend, which has already generated such interest on here and elsewhere, is so far, very small.

There was a photoshopped image, elsewhere on our forum, of a detuned Bulleid, minus deflectors, which I'll probably need in a minute. It was in LMS crimson. Once I'd climbed down from the ceiling and wiped the foam from my chin, I had to admit (though only to myself) that it actually didn't look at all bad.

So who will be turned away? A few enthusiasts may be put off, but would you not attend the railway because of it?
It was OK in red, a few months in purple will not hurt. There are more authentic Bulleid liveries I dislike than this proposal.
Anybody got a rake of Pilkington coaches to put behind it?

Well 34027 does have form for an unauthentic colour scheme. Here's my take on it when on the GCR in 2001 01-1-29 9a 34027 copy copy.jpg

Just another thought - Yes, I know, 2 in five minutes is scary!

Wouldn't it be nice to paint 5596 / 5690 / 5699 in black & chrome, and name it "Platinum Jubilee" for a while?

    Richard.

    You me
You mean like this? Not 5596, nor 5690, nor 5699 but 5593 on the GC in 1995

Yep, something like that would do nicely! As there are currently 3 Mainline certified 5Xs at present, I wonder if anyone's considered it? A certain Mr. Smith likes re-naming and re-numbering 5699...

I guess if you were smart you might make historical reference to how this just continues a railway tradition of bespoke liveries to celebrate notable jubilees ...

    No worries.

The £20k (if accurate) is repaints green > purple > green, which wouldn't be far out. A single repaint was £8k around a decade ago.

You said it "will increase the footfall/income of the SVR. When the locomotive actually appears there will be even more", a two-stage increase. That's unproven. I'm pointing out the first phase increase can't be before April as there aren't any trains, and as @Sidmouth says February's publicity may have dissipated. I'm also saying the second stage from ~June isn't guaranteed. SVR's net profit margin has traditionally been around 2% of revenue, appreciating you're here talking of marginal costs I suspect the ROMI will be whatever one wants it to be, and probably isn't measurable. Personally, I'll avoid it.

Wow, nothing like a coat of paint to stir up a hornets nest!! My thoughts and hopefully a sense of perspective.
-it is temporary and TV is due a repaint anyway.
-it cashes in on this country's obsession with the Royal family (not something I understand, but I can see the appeal, especially to tourists).
-no, there currently aren't any trains, but bookings are open from April onwards. If someone sees the SVR on the telly and then checks out the website, it's a good way to a booking.
-it has the owners' full support.
-there are a number of other 'correct' Southern Pacifics about if you really need to see one.
-if the idea of a purple loco really offends you, visit a different day when it isn't running or avert your gaze - the SVR publishes it's loco roster fully on advance.
-the SVR will shortly be providing a newly restored GWR Hall on full rake of beautifully restored Great Western stock.

If a publicity stunt helps pay for the last item as far as I'm concerned, job done.

Personally I think it's a good bit of fun and I wish the SVR the best of luck with it. My prediction is that the SVR will get a lot of publicity from this.

**As has been pointed out thanks to JK Rowling this isn't actually inappropriate for Taw Valley, but technically that was EWS maroon, not purple.. Perhaps we could argue over the shade?.. **
