    THE DEPARTMENT for Transport has announced that five companies have pre-qualified as bidders for the new South Western franchise.

    The bidders are Arriva, FirstGroup , a joint venture between GNER Holdings and Hong Kong's MTR called Great South Western Railway Company Ltd, National Express Group’s Trafalgar Trains Ltd, and Stagecoach Group’s Stagecoach South Western Trains Ltd.

    The five parties will now be asked to submit detailed bids for the South Western franchise, which will be awarded in autumn 2006, the DFT said in a statement.

    The successful company will run passenger rail services from 4 February 2007. The franchise is for a period of 10 years, the last three of which will be conditional upon pre-set performance criteria being met.
