Just returned from a trip to the DSB Museum open day at Randers, Denmark on Saturday 23rd May and thought I would share my experiences as I’ve found it incredibly helpful reading everyone’s trip reports on here…

Services were hauled by a mix of steam, diesel and railcar between Randers and Langa throughout the day, dovetailed between regular services. Additional steam and diesel services brought visitors to the event from Arhus and Viborg. A vintage bus service also ran between Randers and Langa. Pricewise it cost around £8 to visit the shed (including steam shuttles) and about £8 for a return ticket to Langa.

Steam locomotives E991, HV3 and F 441 all saw use (F 441 operating shuttles between the station and the shed) as well as Nohab/GM diesel-electric locos and railcars.

I spent most of the day exploring rather than at the shed. Services ran at fairly regular intervals and there are a few footpaths that run alongside the line affording good views – in fact I was quite spoilt for a choice of vantage spots. There are a few local bus services that connect to other good spots, though I found they could run as much as 10 minutes early at times!

This year there was also an evening photo charter with E991 organised by Klub 40 after the open day, on the line between Viborg-Rønbjerg.

If I'd had more time I'd like to have explored the Odderbanen between Aarhus and Odder to get some shots of the "Lynette" class railcars in operation, but I didn't know it existed until I stumbled across a railcar at Aarhus... obviously didn't do my homework before I went!

Thanks for that interesting report. Denmark is a great country - distinctive looking steam engines, very friendly and relaxed people, especially the drop dead gorgeous girls! A pity that the diesel engines have largely given way to dmus, though.

How did you find out about the open day? I guess I'll keep an eye on those websites you listed.

It was word of mouth really - I met a Danish guy who mentioned the event and sent me the links to keep an eye on. The date of the open day was published on the website at the start of the year followed by more detail closer to the event (but only in Danish) so I only had a rather sketchy idea of what was going on until I turned up. It seems to be an annual event held about the same saturday each year.

It's rather sad to see diesels across the network languishing outside stations or in depots. The dmus they are using now are hard to get excited about!

Thanks, Folkestone Jack. I'll keep an eye on these websites for next year; have acquired a Danish phrasebook to help following their info.
