I think it was meant more in-house than private and the point made about it potentially being the MNs debut is valid. Better not to hire to other customers until proven so in that respect the Lune is ideal, especially as it features not the most...

That's an interesting point about the Raven A2 boiler and the proposed effective shortening of the boiler by moving the front tubeplate back. The boiler was simply too long, and the last part didn't add to steam generation because the flue gases...

98818 on the Lune Rivers trip for her 'maiden voyage' was always the most likely rostering, and it makes sense. It's effectively a private train. Good luck to them.

I would suggest that the Raven A2 was probably better than TGB, although not as good as the Gresley A1s. As for driving on the "wrong" axle, plenty of other NER locomotives had this arrangement, and many survived until quite late on, the B16...

The thing is that, if you're going to build a Thompson Pacific, it's going to need quite a bit fixing... and the logical conclusions of those improvements would land you exactly where Peppercorn ended up, so as we've got an A2 and a new-build A1,...

Well yes, quite so, Simon, but I was merely making the point that that image does look good :) Quite what the practicalities of building it as opposed to the locomotives he did actually build would have been is, of course, another matter...

I have to say that that "995" is actually a purposeful-looking machine, and very Raven-esque with the drive on to the leading coupled wheels. Thompson's father-in-law would have been pleased, I think?
