Do the photos you've seen show where the landslip is? I was wondering if it was in Baron Wood somewhere?

I'm booked with three friends on the CME tomorrow. So it looks like 60103 and via Shap both ways, unless it gets postponed.
Tyne Valley due to reopen on Sunday!

What a miserable winter it has been in Cumbria !
This is what is posted on the NR Service disruptions :- updated today @ 11:08 !

    Description

Recent poor weather conditions have caused a landslip near Appleby. Work is ongoing to stabilise the landslip and repair damage to the track. However, further slippage has occurred and now both lines are closed. Buses are running between Carlisle and Appleby, extending journey times by up to 60 minutes.

It is expected that one of the two lines will be reopened later today, to allow a reduced train service to run between Carlisle and Leeds.

A full service is not expected to resume until at least the end of February.

    Alternative travel options

Passengers may use CrossCountry between Leeds and Glasgow Central and Virgin Trains between Preston and Carlisle.

You can follow this incident using the hashtag #Appleby

According to entries on the Foscl site, the worsening condition of the embankment at Eden Brows had been identified by aerial monitoring yesterday. The problem then affected the down line and the speed restriction that had been imposed was reduced to 5 mph shortly before the line was completely closed at 1755. Carlisle-Appleby section still closed. Certainly doesn't look good for tomorrow if lightweight units were brought down to 5 mph before eventual closure. As mentioned earlier, the Carlisle-Newcastle line re-opens on Monday.

I see there is a Tweet on the FOSCL site with a photo : https://twitter.com/NetworkRailMAN/status/695520373945823232/photo/1

It looks like the section between Eden Brows and Froddle Crook, which had a work done in 2013 on the west side of the line. The slippage looks to be on the east side of the line, with the River Eden below.

I hear on the grape-vine that this section is likely to remain closed for the rest of Feb. Let's hope there's a path for the WCMEs to return south via Shap in amongst everything else afflicting Carlisle ATM

Looks a serious slip and as it's on a very steep and deep tree lined embankment can't see it being an easy one to repair in the short term.

    What to make of it?

RTT currently showing no trains tomorrow on the Appleby-Carlisle section. WCME outbound to Carlisle via Shap still showing.

There looks to be quite a nice big gap at 1450 out of Carlisle to get back to Carnforth. Let's hope something like that works.

It is a huge reduction of steam mileage though if 60103 is taken off at Carnforth on the return.
