Back in November, Michael Whitehouse posted the following:

“The SE from Worcester will also pick up at Droitwich and run up the Lickey to New Street (there will be a diesel on the back as the load will be 9 cars. The train will then proceed to Hatton Jnct, where the diesel will then haul the train to SOA (with the Castle on the rear). At SOA, the diesel will be detached and the normal mid day SE lunch train to BSH and return will operate. On return to SOA, the diesel will be re-attached to the rear and steam will run chimney first back to Worcester via the outward route. Times will be slightly different to the WTT SE times and when clarified website bookings will open. The Derby and Leicester SEs will follow the same pattern via Hatton Junction so the locos are in the right place”

I assume this is still the plan.

Yeah so what I think he means is that the steam will operate the middle round trip to Birmingham alone, and then on arrival back at Stratford they will reattach the diesel to the back, after running the steam loco round.

So the only real diesel hauled leg is Hatton Jnc to Stratford

Regarding the Shakespeare Express from Worcester, my propensity to book would be increased if the assisting diesel was a Class 37 rather than a 47.

I understand the 37 at Tyseley needs wheelset works before it can run on the mainline, whether this will be complete by then I do not know.
The other diesel option is a class 20, there are several that seem to share their time between Tyseley, SVR and stock moves.

I was given to understand that VT were hiring in 37 403 pending repairs to their own Class 37. So maybe this is an option?

I think this covered day trips last year that were advertised for their own 37, but it isn't a regular occurrence.

Yes, I just checked, and there are no diesel hauled trips advertised so far this year, so perhaps the hire of 37 403 has ended. Is there any news of how the repairs to 37 240 are progressing?

Rather rare sighting of steam on the main line not being propelled by a diesel. First Shakespeare of the season. 5043 Dorridge 070424 lr.jpg

The VT tour on Saturday (20th) to Hereford has been cancelled. According to the RailUK forum "Email received from VT today (16/04/24) offering transfer to Red Dragon on 22/06/2024 or refund etc."<BJ>

That's a shock. Any reason given? The times had be on RTT and I could find nothing on VT's website or FB page.

Thanks for the info, I wondered if the tour was no longer running as the times disappeared from RTT yesterday.

Presumably due to lack of bookings.

I notice The Red Dragon has been re-named 'The Cathedrals Express' and re-routed via Hereford both ways (was due to go via Lydney). It has been a good few years since a Castle has gone up the Marches from Newport so look forward to seeing that. Hopefully it is not too hot for steam then!
