As of 5:27 PM today, 11-25-13, the following news item was sent to 'PLA' (NCRY) from an observer in Southern California...

"A UP employee from the steam program was saying it won't move out to West Colton until Sunday Dec 22. They are waiting for the SD40, reefer and bay window caboose so they can move them in and the 4014 out at the same time. It was to be in the middle of the night, but now local mayors, etc. want to make it a ceremony and Metrolink is going along with it for the publicity. They will detour their trains. It will stop every 20 miles or so for greasing, and be in W. Colton a fairly short time. They will tow with big road diesels front and rear, and pull the "hospital train" with parts and staff to fix it along the way. 30 mph max, and it will be a railfan zoo in Cajon, when it passes through there. Mainly they are waiting on the SD40 which is delayed being painted in Little Rock, AR."

So , something to do on the 22nd of December ---Leave the Mrs with the inlaws.......

For those of you interested, this chap seems to be local, and documenting the movement.

he is obviously not a crank, so don't take all of his observations too seriously.

Worth following his channel for future content.

Another update, giving details of the locality for joining to the mainline , before heading to Colton.

A date of 22.1.14 has been mentioned for this, so would expect the UP crews to appear on site again early next year, according to other info she is about 30 yards from a mainline connection at moment.

Plenty of the clip is of local interest, as I see more of these will post.

    Metrolink News

Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 to be on display at Covina Metrolink Station

The historic locomotive will stop during the excursion to Wyoming

What: Metrolink and Metro are supporting Union Pacific’s move of the Big Boy No. 4014 to Union Pacific's Heritage Fleet Operations headquarters in Cheyenne, Wyo., from the Pomona Fairplex.

For safety purposes, rail enthusiasts are encouraged to view the historic locomotive at the Covina Metrolink Station. No other stops on Metrolink track for public display have been scheduled. Members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, along with representatives from local police agencies and private security, will be patrolling the right-of-way to prevent trespassers along the tracks. Violators, along with those who fail to comply, will be cited.

The Big Boy No. 4014 will depart the Fairplex parking lot in the early morning hours of Sunday, Jan. 26 to begin its 1,260-mile trek.

Who: The Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 is one of the most famous locomotives in the world today. It is the heaviest single expansion steam locomotive ever built, weighing about 1,200,000 pounds. The Big Boy class was designed for heavy freight service and was used between Ogden, Utah, and Cheyenne, Wyo. Built in 1941, No. 4014 was retired in 1959 after only 18 years of service. No. 4014 arrived at the Pomona Fairgrounds in January 1962. In the summer of 2013, Union Pacific reacquired Big Boy No. 4014 and plans to restore it for operation as part of its world renowned steam program.

When: 7 a.m. – Big Boy No. 4014 will be only display no later than 7 a.m.

8 a.m. – Big Boy No. 4014 is scheduled to depart station

Big Boy #4014 is scheduled to move on the rail lines of Metrolink and Union Pacific, from the fairgrounds parking lot overnight between Saturday, January 25, and into the predawn hours of Sunday, January 26, 2014. Union Pacific will also deliver SD40-2c locomotive U.P. #3105, caboose U.P.P. #24567, and a surprise piece of rolling stock into the fairgrounds parking lot. These pieces of rolling-stock will eventually be located inside RailGiants Train Museum. Equipment will be moved by specially selected diesel locomotives.
