An example of a common management approach: "Never mind whether it's possible: just do it".

I suspect that we will never see any accountability on the part of those making what were fictitious allegations w.r.t. this matter.

Accountability? What had you in mind? Managing and to some extent controlling discussion on a discussion forum will never please everyone. I guess the difference on NP is that we would like to think that this forum takes a generally supportive stance with the groups that own and run our heritage fleet, That includes the expectation that contributions will be rooted in fact to inform discussion.

That said, it's good to now read that the Tornado saga continues albeit to an extended time scale.

A simple posting along the lines of "I passed this on in good faith from etc. etc. -----" might be in order. This, shall we call it malicious mischief, has to start somewhere. It does not have the best interests of the movement at heart, quite the reverse. Railway preservation has acquired some rather peculiar "supporters".

    I quite agree.

Of course, it doesn’t mean that if something is going wrong that people should sit on the sidelines and say nothing.

But there is a right way to air issues and be constructive in airing them.

Well, I shall be interested to see if this "generally supportive/fictitious allegations/malicious mischief" etc policy is extended to the GWS and even to their controversial stepchild the 4709 group.

Treat each situation on its own merit and above all make a decision based on the evidence.

The latest from The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust:
"After two long years of overhaul activity, The Trust now looks forward to seeing No. 60163 Tornado in steam as the locomotive goes for running in and ETCS testing at the RIDC test centre before Christmas. The A1 will then return to main line and heritage line operations from Spring 2024."

The article says they had to do a bit of fettling to make it fit but it doesn't sound anything like the scale that was reported here. Obviously they have reasons to underplay the severity of it, but it doesn't read like it was anything out of the ordinary.

All the same, an explicit explanation of what didn't fit and why would have forestalled unconstructive speculation.

And taken time that could have been better used on working on the engine. This is a forum, so even with an explanation right down to the colour of the fitter's socks, people would still speculate. Some people seem unable to resist.

How much time to scribble an explanation for inclusion in one of the "Communication Cords" that they publish fairly often? And how much bad publicity and loss of goodwill by not doing that?

As someone who has spent many an hour attempting to get some kind of rational information from his colleagues in one voluntary group or another I can assure you that unless you've tried you wouldn't believe how long it can take, if indeed you can get the b******s to communicate anything half sensible at all.

That still wouldn't have been enough for some people.

The only bad publicity came about from people with little to do but spread tittle tattle

Whover it came from, with however much or little basis in fact, it was bad publicity, which the A1 Trust could have done without.
