On a personal note I was at Rheine on the day that steam was replaced by diesel traction on passenger duty. On the Saturday al. steam services ran as normal with 012 Pacifics; overnight the replacement diesels were transferred to Rheine and the 012s were stored on the steam shed. The only exception was the staff excursion from Rheine to Emden which the organisers insisted was hauled by 012.063. The main point was the total exchange - no general takeover over time but a straight steam one day - diesel the next exchange.
