A train driver has died after two regional trains collided head on in Switzerland’s Granges-Marnand region.

Swiss train operator SBB has offered its condolences to the driver’s family, as it emerged that 26 injuries had also been reported following the accident.

Two regional trains collided on the Palézieux – Payerne line yesterday (July 29) at 6.45 pm just outside of Granges-Marnand station.

“The management and employees of SBB are upset by the death of their colleague and that injuries are reported. They express their condolences to the family of the victim,” SBB said in a statement.

The Swiss Accident Investigation Service (SESA) is now investigating the cause of the incident.

The collision is the third fatal rail crash in Europe this month, following the Bretigny-sur-Orge derailment in France, in which six passengers died, and last week’s derailment in Spain that led to the deaths of 79 people.
