it couldn't have, the connection was severed at Smallbrook in 1967 the track may have been in situ, but the points were taken out during the electrification works, it moved to Newport on a low loader that was delivering a transformer to the island, the last rail movement was in January 1967, when 24 hauled its sisters to Newport for storage ,possibly it might have also been used later that month, to move the last set of coaches, from Ryde to Newport ,

The move to Newport took place in 1969 by road from St John’s and as Martin mentions Smallbrook junction was disconnected and lifted as far as Havenstreet. w24 stayed at St John’s and was used to assist with the electrification works in 1967.

Hence my comment about floating crane - W24 went using the SR floating crane from Portsmouth to Medina Wharf. (Source: RCTS loco history of the Railways of the Isle of Wight).

I did see a photo somewhere of an road steam traction engine hauling trailers loaded with engines, from BP's works to the docks, where the engines would have been loaded into the holds of ships for the crossing to the Isle of man, or beyond,

I was thinking more of the docks to Douglas Station, but I can see BP using traction engines on this side of the water.

Well we've sorted out W24 but no comments about 43924, the first loco to leave Barry for preservation. Any thoughts on this one?

It visited the SVR in 2014. A move via rail feels unlikely I'd have thought?

The visits to Derby and the SVR were on the back of a lorry to the best of my knowledge, as I say it’s rather interesting how long the list was up until about 10 years ago.

I doubt if anyone’s ever put Rishra on a low loader, back of a minivan maybe.

The one that was in the museum in Swindon must have as how else would it have got there? I don’t think 22 has at Didcot though, I think all its movements have been done by rail.

Not sure if this has been covered but a lot of engines made road journeys from BR ownership to the Clapham museum in the 60s.

I remember seeing a photo of it going through Banbury on the back of a lash up from Tyseley quite a few years ago, I believe their were quite a few of senior BR management who were travelling in it at the time! ;)
I think there may have even a plan for another visit a little more recently but for various reasons it didn’t happen.

This helpfully details how it got to the SVR in the first place (rail) but sadly nothing about any subsequent journey https://www.svrwiki.com/Railcar_22
