Looks like it has been brought inside at Durham to allow the following TPE service to stop then pass after missing out the pathing stop at Ferryhill, i am sure it will catch the time up.

Two of 34A Top Shed's more famous Pacifics met on the site of 50A, York Shed, this morning prior to the A4's departure for Edinburgh. Once based together at Carnforth in the 1970s and '80s I can't recall their paths crossing very often in the current century (but that could just be my ageing memory:() IMG_0036 copy_edited-2.jpg

3 July 1977. We'd just come in behind 4472, taking over at York from 55002, which had started at Newcastle.

Nice. The first main line Santa Special I did was 4498 Carnforth - Sellafied and 4472 on the return leg. 30-12-1978. IIRC it was SLOA's first foray into the Santa market.

I'm trying to remember what rolling stock was on the "Talisman" trip I was on, where 60009 deputised for a failed 60163: A4 one way, Deltic the other. I also think my first trip behind 60163 had a Deltic in one direction too :)

Snap! - with apologies for my rather crude attempt at removing the stanchion just ahead of the loco. mini_IMG_0714 copy_edited-2 copy.jpg

    From Steam Dreams:

We are writing to inform you that regrettably we have just been advised that our rostered locomotive, Sir Nigel Gresley has suffered a failure to its RH cylinder. Large pieces of piston ring have become detached and entered the steam circuit, causing significant damage to the valve which allows steam to enter and exit the cylinder. The damage is such that the locomotive cannot move under its own steam and will have to be towed back to Crewe for rectification. As a result the engine has been withdrawn from service and sadly will no longer be available for our trip.

Unfortunately at such short notice there are no other steam locomotives available to work our trip, but we are pleased to confirm we have managed to secure a vintage diesel Class 40 40013 'Andania'. Andania will be moved from Crewe to Edinburgh tonight to haul the trip which will still go ahead as planned tomorrow with our vintage carriages and with the same level of service as if we were hauled by steam. The timings and platform details will remain the same as confirmed with your tickets. We do appreciate that, while Andania is special in her own right, the failure of Sir Nigel Gresley is disappointing news and please accept our sincere apologies for the disappointment this will cause.

Email from Steam Dreams confirming the steam is FUBARd and the "special" class 40 will replace for both tomorrow and Sunday.

Annoyingly no tickets on service trains back to London available for the weekend either.....

Disappointing for steam fans for sure, but as one who mis-spent his youth chasing diesels I'd say haulage from Edinburgh to Kings X by Class 40 and Deltic is pretty special!

A bit off subject...but.. there doesn't seem to be a "hump" on the casing over the steam dome area...am I wrong?

The Deltic from Edinburgh to London would get my vote.. a bit nearer too at York.
