The frames are almost all shot blasted. If the weather remains good, this could all be done by Xmas and the frames will then be placed on two bogies and placed back in the shed, where work will continue. Attention is now turning to the suspension and making new pins and bushes.
The cab structure has been dismantled ready for an assessment to be made on the work required.
Quotes are also being sought for machining the new cylinder block.
The wheels will hopefully be sent away for turning in the New Year.
There is still plenty of work to be done and money raised before this engine will return to service but it is progressing.
Any idea if she'll be keeping the IoW bunker?
well i would think it would be better to keep her bigger bunker for operational resons, although a shortered bunker as not affected Stepney and others in presevation.
Having chatted with the guy leading her overhaul, I believe that Sutton will keep the IOW bunker, mainly due to the amount of coal you can get in one. Martello demonstrated this this year, only needing to be coaled up once a day, which is ideal, especially when running midweek trains and not having a tractor driver readily available!
How come everyone refers to it as Sutton? It was only named that after being sold off because the real Sutton had been scrapped.
Because it is actually owned by the Borough of Sutton
since it has also carried the name for the best part of 30 years it's become as much sutton as whitechapel , 32650
The Borough of Sutton wanted the orignal but they were a little bit late.
To confuse the issue she has a another name, her days on the Isle of Wight (although only lasted something like 6 years) resulting her being known as Fishbourne.
Presumably the same reason no-one refers to Brighton, Newington or Poplar, they are far better known today by their later names (namely Newport, Freshwater and Bodiam

According to the website, the buffer stops are due to be lifted soon? Any inside news? \/
As negotiations between the railway and Network Rail are at a delicate stage, I don't want to say too much and jeopardise anything.
However, the reason the bufferstops at Birchden will be removed is so that we can get the materials, which are required on the extension, as close to our boundary as possible. From here the contractors, who will bring the track up to passenger carrying standards, will take the materials away for use along the line to Eridge.
Keep an eye out for future developments. Hopefully the team spearheading this exciting project will give me some more concrete information for publication on here at some point soon.

Tom, Seriously consider it. This is one of the most exciting times to be getting involved with the railway. There is so much going on every week. I blink and I miss so much being away for just the odd weekend at the moment!!!!
Just to let you know, there will be an anouncment on bbc radio kent at 1620 about the eridge extention.

I've been trying to post the following item all day but work wouldn't allow it go up.
I'm pleased to announce that today marked the start of work, by Network Rail recognised contractors, on the Eridge extension track works.
Obviously this is the first major step towards returning trains to Eridge, but there is a lot more work to undertake before that happens. I will be posting more detailed news on our website in the next few days for you all to read, so please keep yours open.
Work today has included vegetation clearance, revealing for the first time, the old track work in Eridge station. A very evident piece of work.
Please note that access to the track is strictly forbidden. Although all current works can be viewed from the platform at Eridge.
